I got through the tutorial and realized i had no clue where i was supposed to go. Turns out you have to pay attention to the dialogue. Lesson 1 was learned. Started flying around and forgot that i guess i had stuff to go do. Got lost, ended up discovering the entire map while flying around. 10/10 would fly again. The rest is kinda meh.

This game didn't have a lot of reviews so I was curious to try it out. Aer is definitely a unique experience from other games I have played. It has a heavy focus on exploration, with not many real obstacles or encounters for you to face. The core mechanic which the game markets behind is the bird shapeshifting mode, which I can say is indeed pretty fun to use. However, the game does have some issues which lead to me not recommending it.
First the things which the game did well:
+ Beautiful visuals, the art style is very unique and the game has some really cool landscapes. The overall art direction is amazing
+ Flying as a bird is really fun and the controls feel good
+ The sound design and visual effects are a really nice touch. The visuals of flying through clouds and wind currents are really cool
+ The idea of you piecing the history of the land together through the lil tidbits of lore found with your lantern and in the ruins you encounter while flying is really neat.
Now onto the weak points of the game:
- Gameplay is kind of boring and not very engaging. The flying is fun but the game does not explore it much past what you learn at the start. There is also a serious lack of real obstacles for the player to face.
- Puzzles barely count as puzzles. They are very straightforward and do not provide much of a challenge to the player
- For a game with a heavy focus on exploration, a lot of the islands feel very empty and lack some interesting features. Not to say that each island should contain a lot of content, but a lot of them i just flew by and did not see much.
- Going back to my previous point, I think the game did not explore the flight mechanic much. There was a lack of puzzles centered around the bird mode, and the flying was more used as a form of quickly getting from Point A to Point B rather than a core mechanic to the gameplay.
In summary, I think Aer had a lot of potential to be a very thrilling and memorable experience, and in some ways it did reach that mark. However, Aer falls short when it comes to keeping the player engaged and making the gameplay feel dynamic. The world is really pretty and the visuals never disappoint, but the flying mechanic lacks a lot of depth. The game as a whole feels more like a flight simulator to get from point A to point B rather than a unique exploration/puzzle game centered around flying as a bird. It really hurts to mark this game as not recommended as I really wanted to fully enjoy it, but as it is I cannot recommend the game at full price.

Peaceful exploration game, really loved the polygon and pastel color style, it felt like a successful experiment.
I just wish there was either more puzzles / interaction and a more active last level
Beautiful game. I've played through it twice now, well worth the time. It's pretty fun to fly around as a bird. Cute world to explore, the puzzles aren't very time consuming, and the puddle looking story is deeper than a sea, deeper than a free game would be expected to have. I really like The Void's eyes; someone needs to tell that big puppy that everything is gonna be okay!
