Playtime:
40 minutes
[Yes it says I played 5 minutes, I played all the way through but it was offline so I had to reopen it for a bit to post a review, and I lost my 4 hours]
I saw this while I was getting Enchanted Journey [for Nostalgia], and I thought I might as well give it a try. Yes, I do recommend if you are getting this for someone in the intended audience (aka: a child), but if you want to compare to EJ, be warned that for every step forward, there's also a step back.
There's more to do in the main castle (garden, shop, room decorating) and a purpose for collecting gems (EJ you collected them but couldn't do anything). There's more fashion options, and there's incentive to go back into the worlds to collect more items.
I nitpicked the EJ port for some of the buttons being out of order, but honestly, I'll take that over MFA's keybinding. Your primary buttons are the spacebar, n, and m, which would be okay with WASD movement. However, you use arrows to move, so your right hand is doing arrows while left hand is positioned awkwardly across the keyboard to reach n and m. Plus, there's some things you have to use the mouse for, which I'm personally just not a fan of having to switch back and forth.
Despite Tiana being so prominent in the promo art, she is barely in this. Whereas the other princesses get two chapters each featuring primary scenes from their stories, Tiana gets one mini-chapter with just her in her restaurant. It feels like they tried to make up for how little she's in it by having a major boss battle take place there, but still, she feels like an afterthought. (I have no proof she was shoehorned in because they realized they didn't feature any non-white princesses, but the thought did cross my mind.)
It is primary scenes from the princesses' stories unlike EJ, which creates some neat moments (I loved trying to go through Ursula's lair). However, if you're a story stickler, it may annoy you that there's things like Rapunzel's tower having a door, which defeats the purpose of climbing the hair. While you get some princess-esque outfits, the player character isn't technically a princess, if that's important to you. The story has a good lesson with the player character taking accountability for her mistakes without it being too preachy. The celebration dance every time you open a chest gets old quick.
3.5 Stars out of 5 - it's not actively harmful, but it's annoying in that I can see the potential for it to be better.
