Great game, with a caveat
FG credentials? Been to a few majors, mostly drowning in pools. Placed high in a couple of side tournaments Graphics: Okay? Long story short, it's updating 20 year old assets into a modern engine, with 4k and all that. Some of the models look messed up, with weird smiles. When the game is in motion, VF has a clean look: not that many large visual effects. Hitsparks on counter hit are small, but visible enough to act on them. Single player content: Not there. Virtua Fighter doesn't have a story mode, but older titles had a quest mode, where you roam fake arcades and fight in ghost battles, which unlocks cash to get outfits. R.E.V.O doesn't have that. For offline, you have offline versus, training, arcade, and costume edit. Customization: Not great either. Even though this is an updated port of an old game, a bunch of player outfits weren't ported over to the new engine, so... =| You won't be able to change your characters look without buying DLC. One of the dlc packs has tekken 7 outfits for cross-promotion, and they look nice. Swimsuit outfits in another pack, etc. They're okay, but not great. Online experience: First game in the series to use rollback, and it works well enough (make sure to set delay on 2 or 3). It has ranked mode, and lobbies, which have different modes. If you don't want to just do winner stays in rooms, team battle and league modes are pretty fun options (league is simultaneous matches with up to 16 players). Can set private slots or passcodes on rooms if you just want to play with your friends. VF R.E.V.O has a weird habit of random crashes or occasionally getting stuck in ranked mode. To be honest, it will be like 1 out of every 20 sessions, which is still annoying. For the playerbase, it's basically a discord fighter at the moment. Crossplay is coming soon, which will help a little bit, but you'll have to ping people in one of the discords to get matches that aren't "peak times". To be fair, the playerbase is full of old heads who are willing to help people out all the time. Gameplay: The saving grace of this title to be honest. For a 3-button game, there is a lot of depth and decision making. The VF triangle of guard beats attack, attack beats throw, and throw beats guard is the basis of low-top level VF play. Throws stay strong throughout all skill levels, but of course, there are ways to hedge bets against throw happy opponents. The strongest mix-up options in the game is mostly mid/throw, with caveats and character specific options (at least half the characters have guard breaks, to threaten players who hold the guard button too much). VF5 is a fast game where you're constantly making decisions every second. Rounds are 45 seconds, but if you're lucky, will last like 20 seconds. Combos are short, and damage is fairly high (except for a couple of characters for balance reasons. You don't want the character who has counters to crap out a bunch of damage). In terms of characters, most have a low skill floor, with a couple of exceptions ( imo, 4 of the 19 are complicated, which is a pretty decent spread). Additionally, only one character has to deal with a meter (Shun Di, the drunken boxing/twerk master). I could write about how the stages influence matches, but I've written too much already. Basically, while VF5 is an old game, the gameplay is really polished, and you're forced to constantly make decisions/reads on your opponent. The tutorials are decent, and go into some of the higher level concepts as well. In addition, the developers added a replay takeover function where you can go into your matches (or matches of top players) and see what you did wrong/how can you fix it. Final Rating: 8.5/10. The depth and decision making of this 3 button fighter is some of the most fun i have had in a fighting game, even when I'm losing. However, I think the package that surrounds the game is a little shoddy, like a lack of offline modes, missing customization options, and the game crashing or hanging in lobbies in ranked mode.

Play it. Master it. And show me how to play Akira. This is a solid version of VF5. Lots of fun and great with a fight stick. How you guys play Akira on Keyboard amazes me!

An intense and immersive fighting game that challenges you to make good reads and counterattack to overcome your opponent. This game goes deep by rewarding players who have mastered the fundamentals and developing their own unique style after at least over a 1000 matches! I highly recommend this game!

One of the biggest surprises I've had with a fighting game. VF5 is about aggression, movement, and rapid-fire decision making. Beautiful game that deserves way more players than it currently has.

Finally a real fighting game that I was missing, which has various real martial arts. There are no fireballs, no magic, no 10-second combos and no full-screen flashes that irritate the eyes. This is a very lightweight game, especially for a 3D fighting game, which means that it starts up very quickly, matches load just as quickly, which is important for me because I want to turn on the game and play, and not think about the fact that when I start the game I will have to wait for various menu loadings, etc. The funny thing is that despite the small online, I can always immediately find a game, thanks to a good netcode and play even with a ping of 150ms but for this you need to set the delay higher in advance, I hope they will fix this in future updates. Main menu, this is the first time I've seen this, real replays of people who recently played, I don't even need to go anywhere. I can just launch the game and automatically watch replays from the main menu, which can also be downloaded and replayed thanks to the playback functionality. The last time I played VF2 was back in the Sega Genesis days, so it's a franchise/game of my childhood along with Mortal Kombat but NetherRealm screwed everything up. I hope everything will be fine with VF6 but for now you can enjoy VF5 because it's worth it.

The best 3d fighter out rn in my opinion. Very easy to pick up but you will spend the rest of your life trying to master it. This game does a lot of things better than whats out right now. EVERY move has real purpose and actually works as intended. This game is so much more intense too because of the aggressive nature , shorter rounds, and fighting system. The only issue is that its as niche as its always been but hopefully crossplay will fix all of this.

Ah, Virtua fighter. A game with a community 10 people wide and six feet deep. Dead as a doornail. Online takes ages to find a match. Discord is full of elitists who barely play the game but will tell you all about how perfect it is. It's hard to really talk about the game and what is good and bad about it without getting into the "community" of a game like VF, where they've been beaten down for so many years by a horrible company and developers that they've developed stockholme syndrome for it. REV.O is a mutilated version of a Ps3 game from 2006. And that version had FAR more content than REV.O does now. The DLC straight up has false information in the store pages (650 customization items? It's actually 1 costume for each character and a couple re-colors of the same item with EXTREME limits on what parts can be used with others. Snigle player content? What single player content? you mean the Archiac training mode that rivals Playstation 1 era training modes where it just spits commands at you with no other information such as frame data or even just startup/active frames? The arcade mode so barebones that you don't even get still imagae cutscenes? Onine works....fine? I guess? It's there. It functions. But there's little to it other than what the core game itself provides, which is very little. It is a videogame, with buttons, and by god you can press them. And unless VF6 shakes up the formula a LOT, VF is going to continue staying in it's dusty old box next to the 'member berries they tried to use to sell this husk of what used to be a really feature packed game.

It's complicated... I was really hoping to bring back the memories I had of me and my friend playing Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution on PS2... It happened to a degree: Familiar characters, moves, arenas, controls. It was fun for a while (in VS). However, I never aspired to play online ranked matches with people (especially not from the start!) and it didn't occur to me at all that there would not be a single player mode and customisation that was available even back in the PS2 game. This significantly downgrades the experience for me. I admit I didn't do my research properly this time and maybe it was clearly stated somewhere that the game is simply just a multiplayer experience - I don't know. From my PoV, without single player there is no drive for me to join online matches, like ever, because I would have to play the game to actually properly learn it and I won't do that because there is just an arcade of few matches in a row = nowhere to hone your skills (other than multiplayer) or gameplay loop of any kind that would make me play. (Like gearing, lvling, playing AI tournaments. You know, the good old PS2 stuff..) Otherwise, the game runs great on both steam deck and Linux desktop without any major issues and looks good enough (not breath taking or anything). And that's basically it.. I had my few minutes of fun and there is nothing left for me to do.. No more money/time spending for me on this one. I don't think any amount of costume DLC would make me return unless there is like single player DLC in the future :D I must warn potential buyers -> "Buy this only if you care about competitive multiplayer, else there is simply nothing else to do in the game. There is no single player of any kind" Since I have to give it a thumbs up/down, it's a down for me. But do not let this review discourage you if you want competitive multiplayer and nothing else matters for you (I heard only good things about it).
