The steam English version of this game came out in 2014, so it's safe to say that I am extremely late to Hatoful Boyfriend. However, it has been one of those things that my mind think about once in a blue moon after a youtuber I watch never finished their let's play of it. So after five years of wondering, I finally bought the game and sat down to play.
Let’s just say I was not expecting to be crying to pngs of birds at 5 in the morning after I played through the epilogue.
The first half of the game is pretty simple.. you just… date birds. There is 9 characters and 14 different endings to play through. Some routes are more silly than others, take Okosan and Anghel, whilst others like Kazuaki and Ryouta are surprisingly heartfelt considering the fact that you’ve been sat trying to flirt with a bird.
Whilst you play however, the game makes it obvious to you that something isn’t exactly right. Which it only builds upon the longer that you play through certain story lines and characters. It’s when you play through all the story lines that you unlock the true ending of the game.
A three hour long post-apocalyptic thriller.
The craziest thing about it too is that.. it doesn’t even come out of left field at all! The foreshadowing in this game is so excellent, even managing to hide subtle foreshadowing in silly jokes such as
the player living in a cave or Professor Kazuaki having bleach on his feathers. Hell, even the character of Anghel, who is quite literally.. crazy..
is in of itself one massive piece of clever foreshadowing disguised as a funny gag.
The true ending story is a wild ride which had me crying by the time the credits to the game started rolling. The story itself is a lesson on grief and how it affects the people around you. Saying much more would be going into spoiler territory.
It’s absurd as it is gut wrenching, heartfelt as it is silly, zany as it is disturbing. One minute you’re laughing at a pigeon with a poorly photo shopped mohawk and glasses trying to rob the player and the next you’re reading about human heads in jars, genocide and the ethics of forced bird experimentation.
Overall, my hunter-gatherer instincts are telling you to play this game. 100%. I unironically adore Hatoful Boyfriend now, definitely something i’ll replay every now and again.

I heard good things about this game, and now I understand. This is genius.
Amazing otome game with dramatic stories. Yes you're a human romancing your pigeon classmates, but everything actually makes sense.
About the route structure, without spoilers: I would recommend clearing all other routes before the "BBL" long route, so you get the epilogue right away.
The only negative things that I noticed are technical: the game froze a few times, and there were some display problems with sentences continuing out of the text box (at least in Japanese). It would be more convenient with a log too.

What the fuck.
I want the teacher to hit me with his car. This is unironically probably one of the best experiences I've ever had, 10/10.

It's a dating sim. . . with birds. . .
That's it. It's silly and if you choose the right path you can do what my friend could not. His cry of despair as we beat our first run through and he screamed,
"Wait! I wanna f*ck a ghost!!!"
Now, there really isn't f*cking, but, um, you may find the other thing.

I just realized I haven't made a review for Hatoful Boyfriend despite talking all my friend's ears off about it.
Hatoful Boyfriend looks like a simple game at first with a funny punchline "you play as a human dating sentient birds LOL" and I came into the game thinking the same thing.
I was dead wrong.
The writing in the routes seem rather simplistic and I believe this is intentional, to catch people off guard and think it's just a silly game. However once you've gone through the game and ALL the endings, you realize that it's all so cleverly written. There are so many little things I found in the game that seemed silly that actually HAS plot significance!
Not to mention, there are clues scattered throughout the game that I only realized on my second playthrough that hints at the true ending.
The writing style shift, the tonal shift of the game, and the sudden strong characterization of each birds and the surprisingly rich world lore hit me like a truck in the true ending and it was such a fun experience. I truly cannot recommend this game enough. Just have a little patience and try to reach the true ending!!!!
(Nageki is best boy and I cry everytime I replay his route)
