Your first 8 hours of actual play time (about 45 runs), you'll be grinding up on normal of the first stage, to start getting the first tier of the higher perm skills like crit and knockback. After that the money comes easy enough to upgrade meaninfully after every run. The game gets to be an interesting puzzle that includes your hero choice, the map layout, the sidekick and how the game cards work (as well as which ones are likely to appear). That requires all the knowledge you gained banging your head against the first 8 hours. Some people can handle it, some can't. Developer is active and involved. It's pretty fun as a set of puzzles/unlocks/achievements, all said and done.
