Let me start by saying I've been a longtime fan of this series and with the recent exception of this game, I've played through all the mainline series games. With that said, you may wonder why I'm saying no and well, its really because I can't really recommend this game in good faith to anyone besides super hardcore fans of the series. Even then, I'm somewhat hesitant to do so since it's so mediocre. (Yes, I know I have 120 hours but that's the accumulation of my old save + the new one). I purchased this game back near release or on the very same day in 2014. And because the PC port was absolutely terrible, I never finished it. And this unplayable state continued for a while. It was only recently in an attempt to clean up my backlog that I decided to push forward with it. To start, the inability to make multiple saves and having to go through Ubisoft Connect to turn off cloud sync which I couldn't find until I googled and saw a reddit post explaining where I could find it so I could delete my old saves is absolutely annoying. Its only 10 years later that I can truly appreciate how much I hate launchers and other bs that prevents you from immediately playing a game you supposedly "own". What about the actual game itself? Well, I think to some extent, my view is biased because I've become terribly tired of the AC formula in recent games. I absolutely hated Valhalla and Mirage was disgustingly mediocre despite cutting down on all the filler content. This game's side content barring some murder mysteries that were interesting generally held no real value to me as a player. And I only realized that after collecting meaningless shit for a bit (ok, a really long time) that I should just move forward with the narrative and forget all this stuff. In fact, this game has kinda cemented for me that I'm tired of completion playthroughs with no payoff. Visually, this game can look pretty stunning with reshade tweaks but Ubisoft never attempted to fix the LOD issue that plagues the game so there's a lot of inconsistency in regards to the games visuals. They also never fixed the large amount of consistent pop-in. I also got random crashes here and there. Vsync option never worked appropriately so I had to cap my framerate using an external app. I also hated that I couldn't play at 4K/120fps just cause its so badly optimized even now. This game should easily run at that with a 4080 Super/13700k but it does not. Moving on to the gameplay, I hated how much the controls fought against me in this game. Old school AC parkour really is "different" and while I can't really articulate how much it differs to new AC parkour since I played Mirage well over an year ago, I can say it was frustrating to play overall. Movement throughout the world and stealth gameplay just sucks. The controls react in a way that's counterintuitive and I know this is partly a result of this older system. I know it may sound trivial but playing this after playing the newer games with the newer system just makes it more poignant how annoying the old one was. This really affects the stealth gameplay which I think is really more punishing than rewarding. Part of the reason for that is this older system how you can make a dumb mistake unintentionally due to the way it works. The other part of the equation is the enemy AI. They react to anything and stealth in this game hasn't been fun since Ezio era probably. It felt much easier and quicker to just barrel through enemies and murder my way to a target. Once you "leveled" up a certain point, there is no reason to play stealth unless you're looking to punish yourself. This also spills over into other stealth based missions that aren't about assassination. It's really anachronistic but I understand that this is somewhat a hindsight issue now that we're in the future. What about the narrative? The first thing that drew me to the AC series was the secret societies, conspiracy theories, and their tie-in to historical events. However, this is also a personal opinion, but the French revolution is absolutely boring. A lot of the times, you're not really involved in the revolution effort. Arno just seems pretty apolitical in a time of instability and crazy excesses being experienced and felt almost daily which is just weird. It just seems pointless to place that character in the setting that is the French Revolution. Arno just kinda meets these big historical figures as he goes along his personal quest for redemption/revenge. You never really feel like there's anything else to it and given the title of the game, you would think they'd have explored that idea of "unity" with regards to the French revolution. In fact, it gets even more silly once you finish the game and play the DLC after. His story is just very flat I guess. I think AC Unity is where you start to see some of the beginning of the decline in this series overall. It feels as if its just leaning on the previous games and what they set up more so than trying to stand on its own. If I didn't mention the multiplayer, its because its long dead and I have zero interest in it. The AC series, with the exception of games like Origin/Odyssey, haven't felt fun/fresh in a long time and playing through this only further cemented my anxiety about Shadows probably having no real depth or character to it.

After getting every achievement I think I can finally review this game. I want to keep this short but overall I had a really good experience with this. After about 20 hours I more or less had full control over the game and at no point did I ever really think that I was going to desynchronise so in that sense, it can be an easy AC game. That being said I really enjoyed the story as well as France. The setting is really well done and although there are bugs throughout the city, combat, parkour, I really did enjoy myself in Assassin's Creed Unity. Honestly for someone just wanting to add another Perfect Game to their list, this is a great choice. 7/10 (yes, I know the dreaded 7/10 IGN rating)

As a fan of the AC series for nearly 2 decades at this point, it pains me to admit most people's criticisms for AC Unity stand completely true even today, and while the game HAS upsides to it such as still being damn beautiful, be prepared to experience frustration beyond belief trying to play it. Let alone the fact that the game is no longer being properly supported by Ubisoft any longer so any game effecting bugs (including a VERY well known one present in the game since 2014 that affects the achievements they JUST ADDED) will not be fixed, and any attempts to reach out to Ubisoft support will get you nowhere unless youre lucky enough that it somehow is a "connection issue". Take it from someone who was run around with troubleshooting tasks by Ubisoft support team for 3 weeks before being told the game is no longer being worked on and they cannot fix issues. Ridiculous company, meh game, barely worth the time, effort, or money, even on sale. Wont be coming back to this title any time soon.

The new gameplay and parkour was nice to toy with, ignoring some flaws. It was quite easy to interrupt your attack before it hits with a counter. It made it easier to fight hoards of enemies, but maybe too easy. The parkour made it harder to make mistakes or drop from heights you would normally die from. It isn't that bad, but sometimes it could feel like running into an invisible wall. The parkour was also a bit more flashier, but wasn't bad to free roam with. The story was quite a nice story with some flaws, but I didn't find the flaws that bad as the characters were all selfish or ignorant in their own ways. I really enjoyed how the DLC ended Arno's story and understanding of the brotherhood and what it means being an assassin. I would also like to point out that all multiplayer missions do not require others. It will be much harder, but it is not impossible.

Absolutely gorgeous game. About the game. You play as a skilled assassin named Arno Victor Dorian and the game is located in France late 17th century, France’s revelation. About the game now. The story could have been promising but it is, as the time goes by and replay the story I see that it’s just a decent story. Nothing more, nothing less. 7/10 for the story. Now about the mechanics.. about combat mechanics, if the game was set to be realeased at 2020+ I think the combat mechanics would be absolutely magnificent. But it’s not, it feels nothing as close to responsiveness, a bit jaggy sometimes tbr and slow at times also. I wish it could be like AC3. The good things this game has is its parkour system in which is the best in the series yet and the character Arno Victor Dorian is, if we compare them to spiderman movies, he is like kinda Andrew Garfield but in assassins creed. We all respect Tobey maguire (Ezio Auditore da Firenze) but we all know that Andrew Garfield is one the best and respected spideman. Arno is Andrew Garfield’s spiderman. All in all I enjoyed the game a lot and also you can play with your friends coop missions. I recommend the game.

The good old Assassin in the French Revolution era. Maybe a few too many collectibles, and the controls can be a bit tricky as always, but overall, it's very good!

Ubisoft, how the hell do you mess up this badly in a game set in your own country. I'm just going to focus on the things Unity did well as there is nothing else to say that hasn't already been said about the negatives. Paris is a great map and probably the only thing with which Ubisoft paid homage to their home country. There are a lot of customization options (something which would disappear from future games until AC odyssey came out) and the parkour animations have gotten a lot better, even if the system itself is a lot worse than what came before. That's it, there's not much else that is good from this game. Everything else is either a massive downgrade from previous entries, like stealth for example, or has been left untouched. You do get the Dead Kings DLC for free when buying the game and that is probably the only reason why I can recommend Unity as it's actually a very decent expansion. Only Secrets of the Revolution DLC adds new singleplayer content to the game in the form of 2 missions and 1 murder mystery. They will all take you around 40 minutes to complete, and for 7 bucks they are not worth it at all. 5/10
