Man HEBEREKE getting a rerelease was definitely not in my 2024 bingo card. The original is a serious contender for best NES game, and easily the one which has aged the best in my book. As for the rerelease itself, it`s not too shabby: love the fact that this comes bundled with high-res scans of the original boxart and manuals, and the overall presentation is slick and super cute - as it should be. ...I do have a few nitpicks though. Namely the fact that: (i) Sunsoft did not bother to implement the english translation directly into the ROM - which is especially weird when a fan translation patch has long been available; (ii) this does not include the (very different) PAL release; (iii) having only 1080p and 720p as resolution options for this sub-240p NES game is wild. Overall though, I'm just stoked this exists at all. Hebe/10, easy recommendation (on a sale).

This is a remarkably fun little hidden gem of a game. Probably the best "metroidvania" style game I've played on the NES. It is geared more for younger audiences, with the cute mascot style graphics, and generally overall ease of gameplay, but that doesn't take away from the game's solid design all around. The map is pretty good to explore, the power-ups you receive in order to progress - largely in gaining extra characters you can swap to, but sometimes other accessories to help you out - do a good job of opening up more of the map. There may be some potential to cheese a few places, but overall it seems to be solidly designed against that. This game wasn't entirely unknown outside of Japan. It had an international release under "U-Four-ia: The Saga" - and has a sequel based on that name here on Steam. This release, however, only contains the original Japanese ROM. Which is untranslated during play. However, the game uses the emulator itself to unlock translations as you play, in a separate menu. It is annoying that you have to go to that separate menu to see the translations (and it's interesting that it also includes Japanese translations for the U-Four-ia version, to highlight the differences between the two), and they only "unlock" once. So once you have them, you don't get a notification as to which one is which again on replays. Honestly, I am torn on this decision. On one hand, I do wish it had the English version, on the other I think the Japanese version is much better overall. Giving the characters a little more personality and humor. Though I think something that put a translation on screen rather than in another menu would have been better. I also noticed a good deal of slowdown while playing, not all of it seems to be linked to the NES game itself. I do not know if this was caused by something on my end, or if the emulator they're using has some memory leaks. But it happened to me, so be aware of it. The game does include some emulator features, such as quick save and load, or rewind, and those can be disabled in a challenge mode with a leaderboard. Don't pass this game up. It really is a lot of fun, and I'm glad to see it starting to get the attention it deserved.
