I had high hopes for No Man's Sky. I tried many times, but it just can't hook me. I'm uninstalling after several hours.
The main problems, as I experienced them:
1) Not fun to progress. Typical No Man's Sky quest: go to X and do Y. You go to X, but there's no Y to be found. You alt-tab to your web browser, and search up what is wrong. By the time you figure out how to work around the broken quest (or badly communicated quest goals), you feel like you're doing a job, not playing a video game. Next time you think about launching the game, a feeling of dread overwhelms you.
2) Grindy and tedious - the game seems to be balanced to 'make the user spend time walking' rather than 'fun'. Which is unfortunate, because travelling (on planet or in space) is slow and awkward. It's cool that there is a lot of vegetation and ground objects, but literally everything inhibits my movement, every 0.5 seconds. That part where your starter ship runs out of fuel in transit, and there is nothing nearby to fuel it with? *Chef's kiss*
3) Ugly - dear god, what graphic designer thought it would be a good idea to make your buildings WOOD PANELLED? Whatever desire I had to build a cool planetary outpost evaporated when I saw the joke that is No Man's Sky base tileset. You're on a vibrant, colourful alien planet, and your house looks like a 70s station wagon. Just tragic.
People are fawning over this game, but I can find a half-dozen cheaper base-builder / exploration titles that keep you in the fun zone way better.

I love this game because it always gives me something to do, and the fact that it has a fighting aspect is sick, and the fact that its in space is even more sick. I love this game, there's so much you can do, and I never get bored playing this game ever. Would highly recommend.

I bought this game discounted after recent reviews stating it was now a hidden gem. Wow, this game is terrible. It's like it was written by AI. There's no soul to it. It's lacking in story and the planets and combat are not great. There's just no point it, just endless amounts of the same thing over and over. Did not hold my interest at all.

Base game is amazing, all updates add even more value to it (basically free DLCs), whatever the price I'd get it again. Love it.

Don't get me wrong. No Man's Sky is a very fun game. It's visually stunning and there's a TON to do. But....... I want to play with my friends. Multiplayer is in a very sorry state in my opinion. There's a plethora of bugs when doing anything in a friend's base. Controls for allowing friends to do things in your base are extremely limited. And worst of all, why can we STILL not build a shared base? You can assist a friend in building a base, but that base still completely belongs to your friend. If they are offline, you can't do anything meaningful there. Putting a small amount of effort towards making multiplayer features better would go a very long way towards making this game more fun. It would also bring me back to it. Maybe make Clans/Guilds or something that can then own structures with their own set of rules/controls? And focus more on fixing bugs.

This game has gone from one of history's worst flops to become one of the most beloved games available. Hello Games is constantly putting out new content and mechanics, so I'm still enjoying it 500 hours in.

If you're interested because of how people speak of this game as a labor of love and a fixed mess, there are some things to know.
It's true that they continue updating this game with huge, substantial updates that change and improve gameplay. The problem, imo, arises with those who haven't played before. Once you're established and comfortable, the game is super deep and there are many playstyles to suit your desires, but the whole introduction and tutorial of the beginning of the game is obviously forgotten. The story is boring, it's unnecessarily unclear about what to do, and it reeks of low effort. I know seasoned gamers hate handholding, but in this game I think it's necessary for there to be some preliminary pushing to get you to know what you're doing.
This is one of those games you need a wiki to understand.

Thank God they didn't abandon this game; it keeps improving with every update they release, clearly showing their love and dedication to it. It's everything Starfield wished it could be.

My husband bought me this game when it had first came out and I loved it. The only problem was, was he bought it on his Steam account and when he died I lost his information. After I settled back down in the states and some time had passed, I looked into it again and it was too expensive. I just looked at it last week and it was on sale for 60% off and I had to have it. I was taken back to a happier time when I was a little more innocent and my heart wasn't weighed down. I can escape into the stars and savour a little bit of nostalgia from a happier time. This game took my breath away then and with all the updates it has had in the years in between it continues to capture my imagination and whisk me away to far flung lands.

No Man's Sky achieved the impossible—resurrection from gaming's most notorious failure into a content-rich exploration simulator. Yet it remains the perfect embodiment of modern gaming's existential paradox: infinite content generating finite experiences. You'll spend hours naming planets no one will visit, cataloging species no one will see, and building bases no one will inhabit—a perfect digital recreation of our cosmic insignificance.
