Two years ago, a group of young teenagers found themselves trapped inside their school. They suffered through the longest night of their lives, chased by abominable creatures created by their principal. Some of them survived that terrible night, while others perished.
Retro Review
Obscure always stood out to me for being a survival horror game that also features coop mode. Although it’s less complicated than for example the resident evil mansion, it’s the closes to an isometric resident evil in coop you had back then. Now I never played the second obscure until now and I realize why it never received a third game.
Gameplay
Remember all the games features in obscure 1? Like obscure 2 is the same game. But everything less. There is nothing new. Characters still have a single ability, but they dont have different stats anymore. The positive is that melee combat is now much better and more useful. There are a few more weapons but those have barely any uses. You receive not much ammo aside for the first weapons you pick up. I received an UZI at the later stages of the game and never once received ammo for it aside its starting ammo. The way you receive those weapons is really unimmersive, you have to keep finding three keys, which are usually in rooms close to the keybox and have to open it. You don’t know which weapon might be inside, so if you are unlucky and miss for example the flare gun which is one of the best weapons for bigger enemies good luck. Unless you don’t use a guide, you need to look for every single key in order to not miss any potential useful weapon.
Game does not have a real interconnected map anymore. The game was always linear in a way, but the first obscure felt much more like resident evil 1 with some good backtracking and learning the map layout.
Obscure 2 is completely linear.
The main idea of the first games combat as light. You had insta kill light grenades, more resource management due to finding new weapons where you need to tape flashlights again (which in turn made the AI actually help). It just removed all that interesting stuff. While its nice that enemies don’t corner you anymore so fast, all the unique aspects of this game are gone.
Story
While in Obscure 1 you could let people die or save them, here this system is completely gone. Main characters will die, the antagonist is a main character from obscure 1 and at the end basically no one is alive anymore, especially the last death of the game was completely idiotic and unnecessary. The antagonist’s intention is absolutely not clear and I did not understand it at all. It was uninteresting, aside the variety of locations provided.
Aesthetics
Remember the very unique OST from the first game? There is one time I heard a single track that came close to it. Otherwise, it was all generic action music or environmental stuff. This game offers less atmosphere and only has a higher variety of set pieces as you switch from dorms, to underground, to a forest, old mansion etc.
Conclusion/TL;DR
An inferior game in every way. It feels like obscure 2 should have been obscure 1. In itself it’s not a bad game, it’s still a coop survival horror game which is rare and this one is still fun to play. Comparing it to the previous game, how can I recommend a game that is worse, or has less depth in every way than its previous instalment?

Bad Camera angles, most of the time that I clearly could've avoided damage I was just caught off-guard by surprise due to camera issues. Unlike the previous game, this one suffers from bad character design overall,
The gymnast is the only good character combat-wise, everyone else sucks and will lose tons of health while attempting to engage in combat.
Some Keywords: Obnoxious puzzles, Keyboard nightmare, Wonky Combat system.
Obscure II is the reason Obscure III never became a real thing. The game also starts with a strong drug apology, with the main characters being saved from the infection early story because they just had smoked some new junk and everyone else who didn't smoke the new junk gets infected and turned into monsters themselves.
Again, the game sucks. period. Do not be misled by the fake positive reviews.
