At the time of this review I have about 70 hours of playtime in Gray Zone. So far, I absolutely love this game. The map is huge and offers a lot of variety in the locations that you can visit. Exploring and unlocking new LZs and finding new POIs is extremely satisfying.
What I like about the game:
-weapon selection and customization. There’s not a TON of weapons yet but the ones that are available are fun to use and offer a lot of customization.
-map design. The map feels alive, you can walk from one side to the other and encounter hostile and friendly forces along the way.
-realism. People like to compare extraction shooters to Tarkov and while this game is similar, it does it better in my opinion. You don’t break your leg from stepping off a curb but you still have to be mindful of injuries and hydration/food. The gun mechanics are also realistic.
-overall fun. To put it simply, this game is fun. Very fun. Completing tasks and exploring the map doesn’t feel like a chore. Losing gear isn’t the end of the game either.
-ability to play PVE only. I don’t have to worry about other players camping an extract or hiding in some corner if I don’t want to. You have the ability to play against other real people if you want, but it isn’t required.
What I don’t like:
-there isn’t really anything I dislike about the game. The only “complaint” I have is the difficulty of the AI at times. I saw an enemy through my scope, probably 200 yards away, and he turned and shot me in the head with an AK with no optic. One shot. Dead. I think the AI needs a little work to make it great.
Overall, I believe this game is fantastic. With continuous support from the devs, it can be even better.

Good gameplay loop, evolving meta and what appears to be a good roadmap for the future. Recommend!

Good game. Like the gunplay and the PVE system. One of the better FPS’s I’ve played in a while but my main issue is the AI, they’re balance is unrealistic and they can either be dumb as shit, or be a methhead with super sense, and beam you from now where and you lose all your shit. Makes me wanna stop playing the game entirely with the amount of stuff I’ve lost.

TL:DR Technical and mechanical hole the devs might not dig themselves out from. The game might be playable in 5 years. If it still exists by then that is.
Game is not and will not be functional in the forseeable future as the devs have no idea how to fix the mess they are in.
Starting to become a trend amongst UE5 games. High promises and a roadmap that changes about a year into development when devs realize UE5 is a fecking nightmare.
Looks good, feels dead, runs shit. Little to no coherent content. Beautiful map, gigantic, but only helo's to travel in. Haven't seen any mention as to other vehicles joining the pool.
Helo's travel in a set path, no dynamic travel whatsoever. Mandatory cooldowns on call-ins make for frustrating, slow, slooooow drop-ins. Made even more frustrating when the first AI enemy T-poses towards you and insta-domes you from across a field when all you could see wasn't even a pixel.
High-end hardware runs 60(+) fps with frame-gen. Stutters and freezes frequently when loading in new areas. Very, very noticable pop-in.
Another UE5 shitshow.
"Bla you bought an Early Access game bla bla" -- Yes, early access, this is barely a finished concept. The devs don't know what they want this game to be.
Misplaced and mismanaged priorities for development, little to no communication to the community, a sudden shift to PVP and a vague roadmap whereas it was advertised as heavily PVE focused.
All in all, from the way it looks this is an unfixable shitshow that is going to be abandoned sometime in the near future.

Almost 1 year after GZW launched into early access and unfortunately I cannot recommend the game for a few important reasons.
Reason 1: Game still experiences frequent crashes and instability even on servers that are well below the player cap. The game usually crashes about every 30-45 minutes with de-sync causing battles vs the AI to be like fighting a terminator.
Reason 2: The AI in the starter towns are using tier 1 ammo and severly damaged weapons but they STILL 1 shot the player to the chest even when equipped with tier 3 armor. The AI also still track the player through walls and fences with pin-point accuracy.
These two issues have been persistent since the games launch into early access and have still not been addressed a year later.
Reason 3: With the new updates to the game we now have durability for weapons and armor as well as attachments. This is nothing new in these types of games but the issue is the durability loss on the armor. The AI in the starting areas use tier 1 (soft point) ammo but 2 shots to a helmet or 3-4 shots to tier 3 armor will completely destroy them. Once destroyed you can not repair anything, armor or weapons/attachments. This makes even early game battles very costly and removes the benefit of doing the early game quests.
The game has potential but, as per usual, it seems like the game devs focus is on pushing out more and more content rather than ironing out the problems with the content they already have. Gamers do not want to invest hours into a game when they could be 1 shot in their best gear by a low level AI using basic tier ammo and armor or crash 30 minutes into a mission. I have invested almost 90 hours into the game so far and recently returned to check out the state of the game before the 1 year anniversary of launch only to find it in worse condition than it was at the beginning.

+ The map is huge. A lot of opportunities.
+ The diversity is good.
+ You feel the progression.
+ You somewhat feel rewarded for the grinding.
+ You need to put your thinking cap on and solve some tasks.
+ Sound is great.
+ Graphics are great.
- AI kind of breaks the "Tactical" aspect of the game. They get agro way to fast and they try to shoot you trough concrete walls like it's 2001.
- There should be some sort of tutorial at least for weapon modding.
- Coop could be improved.
Overall, good imo

Game is in pre-alpha, not a complete game so keep that in mind. I have thousands of hours in Escape from Tarkov, I played it since pre-alpha as well. This game is definitely the future of extraction shooters. Tarkov is in shambles, overrun by hackers and the netcode is still awful after all these years. This game has a passionate team of developers unlike Tarkov. I say give it a shot, i've had a blast so far.
