A fun little platformer with short levels and leaderboards that create a great platform for speedrunning. It took me about 2 hours to complete, and while it's not overly challenging - some levels, especially with those pesky eels, offer a nice test of skill and control.

On the surface, Don’t Drown is exactly what it presents itself as. That is, a no nonsense action platformer with the simple goal of beating every level. However after a few levels you’ll realize that isn’t the whole truth. You see, it’s not about beating the game . . . it’s about beating other people; and as you descend deeper in the ocean to slake your unquenchable thirst for riches; you begin to make out the deeper metaphor of the title. Don’t Drown isn’t stating your character's goal. It is stating yours. Exhorting you to prevent yourself from drowning in the doldrums after realizing the level you just took rank 1 on after 47 tries was almost immediately claimed by another ill-fated sea-dog once you moved on to the next. In some ways Don’t Drown seems to be a gateway drug for speed running. Shallow enough that you’ll learn the ropes effortlessly but with enough depth that each new personal record grants a sense of accomplishment and leaves you (Davey) jonesing for more. Let its excellent soundtrack wash over you as you batten down the hatches in preparation for the trials ahead. On a more pragmatic note, the developer runs a tight ship. After reporting the permanent theft of a chest by a scallywag of a crab, a new version was available within hours. It’s refreshing to not be left high and dry after the release of a game. It is games like this that make me want to shout at Ubisoft and other so-called “Triple A” game studios: “Snoutical was able to build this in a cave! With a box of scraps!” If after reading this review you’re still not onboard, you need only ask yourself one question. “Am I a bad enough diver to rescue the treasure?”

Don't drown reminds me of more accessible Mario Wonder's "Final Final Test Badge Marathon." All the levels are bite-sized with a good leaderboard system to compare your times and scores globally or with your friends. You don't have all the badges but you have enough speed variation(sprint/regular/with chest/sprint with chest) that you're more than enough occupied with those variations and always trying to move more quickly. You're also trying to find creative ways to get the environment to deliver your chests for you, to cut seconds off your time. The sprint mode is so fast it's hard to react, so at some level you're replaying patterns of previous runs that worked. You'll often find yourself taking advantage of moving through enemies when you're damaged, until you eventually run into enemies you can't move through when stunned. It's a good adaptation, keeping people from skipping some of the technical parts. The hit boxes and responsiveness are great. You never feel like the game cheated you into getting hit. By default the death sound effects(if there are any) are muted and you're back on your way to solve the puzzle again. It's like "I messed up and that's ok." Inevitably you'll fail hard. Thankfully there's no annoying animation or sound when it happens outside of a short death animation that can be skipped. Going from a failed run to restarting the level takes less than a second. The leaderboards provide constant tension between finishing the level and finishing the level quickly. Additionally, if you're going too slow, you'll run out of oxygen. I spent multiple hours trying to speed run certain sections and I'm really hoping for a no hands achievement, as I'm fairly certain one of the earlier levels could be completed without actually grabbing the chest. The level design is great. You do a massively clean section and realize that's how it's meant to be done and then hit your head on a stationary object you've never even noticed before. The eels were a bit tedious, but once you get past that set of levels, the game gets more open and the epic music starts to come online. It's a good time, worth more than the money you paid for it and incredibly well polished. Add some scores to the leaderboard; I want to see how I compare.

This is a fun speed-run platformer. Each level only takes a minute or two, but you'll want to keep trying to better your times and climb up the leaderboards.
