The game has a Gradius style upgrade system with a bit of StarFox (rolling deflections) and Ikaruka (polarity shielding) thrown in for good measure. The controls and mechanics take a little while to get into and it took me an age to figure out how to upgrade / shield and deflect to a point that i could actually beat the first level. It is worth sticking and you do start to feel like a bad-ass mowing down enemies once your ship is powered up. Played for just over an hour and i'm enjoying it more the more i play (and get better i guess). It's not an easy game and using your smart bombs is necessary to take down the bosses quickly (but it does drain half your health bar and you then need to shield absorb to replenish health). Not quite a bullet hell shooter but this does feel like Life Force with updated graphics and clever mechanics. Gameplay requires strategy once you start advancing and it takes a while to remember you can switch fire directions to shoot backward too. I bet once i get good enough this game will have some serious replay value. Voice acting is OK but laughable at times (clearly AI voiced) but the overall quality of the game is solid. Online leaderboards are there to keep hardcore score chasers happy also. I'm on level 4 now and already top 5 in the leaderboard. Overall a decent game for the price of a subway sandwich!
