I'm not really sure why this game is getting so much hate. A lot of the complaints ssound more like a "git gud" situation than anything having to do with the game.
Is it fairly difficult? Yes. Punishing or unfair? Absolutely not.
I played on the second highest difficulty. Enemies definitely do a lot of damage but it's nothing crazy. The power of the enemies forces you to respect them. And their aggressive AI will cause you to cede ground frequently.
You cannot just run in full speed and expect to drop everything in front of you while taking a little bit of damage. Every hallway or room you enter has to be respected You have to check your corners and lines of sight when you enter a new area. Use cover properly. Prioritize close range enemies that will rush you, as well as enemies from across the arena that are trying to take you out.
Also, you can immediately ADS with all guns, which is a big plus in my book. You can hip fire or, you can aim down sights, and the range at which you are engaging the enemy makes a massive difference on which one you will use. The hit detection at both close up and range is very accurate, and you get a lot of visual and auditory feedback when you land shots and kill enemies.
Importantly, this game is in now way a boomer shooter, nor do I think it advertises itself as such. I would say it's an over-the-top, fantastical, tactical shooter. Yes the guns are crazy, and you see a bunch of points appear above the enemies when you kill them, but that doesn't mean that encounters should be taken lightly.
Firefights are frenetic and twitchy. There will be guys coming from everywhere and your head will be on a swivel constantly. There's s*** blowing up everywhere, shooters from range, invisible guys running up on you trying to close the distance and then suddenly appearing right in front of you and scaring the s*** out of you. But the thing is, you are not Doom Guy and this is not Doom Eternal, and you can't play this game the same way. You are fallible, and not particularly mobile, so you need to be crouching behind whatever you can use as cover, peeking corners, strafing, etc.
And, btw, the checkpoints are not spaced unreasonably far apart. Overall, its challenging, it demands that you give some thought to how you approach firefights, but it is not hard, frustrating, punishing, etc. It's a no frills, straightforward, challenging, above average FPS game.
Is it a 10 out of 10 Masterpiece that's breaking new ground and innovating in the first person shooter genre? No. Of course not. But not every game has to be that. Not every game has to be amazing. Sometimes a game can just be a good entry into a genre that you really enjoy. It's not doing a ton, but what it does, it does competently, while also having a respectable graphical fidelity and solid optimization. On an honest, not overly inflated grading scale, it's a proper 6/10 that scratches a certain itch for a specific kind of FPS gamer.
And, apparently, I fall into that category. I have been craving a game that was just a straightforward first person shooter, with tough, strategic firefights; snappy, responsive gunplay that lets me ADS with every weapon; and clear, high quality graphics that were tuned for a mid-to-low tier PC. It wouldn't be my first pick at full price, but if you see it on sale, I say give it some consideration.
