Love this game! This is pretty much Secret of Mana in 3D. Personally, I think the graphics are great. I like the soft, cell-shaded look. Game-play and speed is perfect. And for the collectors out there, the Monster encyclopedia even tracks the loot drops for each monster!

Terrible controls, impossible to switch to keyboard if you have connected gamepad. Not even wonna try to play on such 'welcome' from devs.

Story, environment, character, combat, environment design are all hard to chew. It seems to have a lot of effort creating those creatures, maps, but when the system putting together, it feels like a 3rd class amateur sew papers together

Wanted to point out some glaring issues with this game is that looking at the controls layout with a keyboard and controller will softlock you in that part of the menu. You have you kill the program on task manager to get out of this to restart. buttons can't be remapped to a mouse and keyboard buttons cannot be rebound. For a game at 50 CAD MSRP i expect basic keyboard and mouse support, but this game does not provide it. While the game is not terrible he story thus far is pretty generic and uninteresting with passable gameplay. So a mediocre game with a mediorce price point won't sell. On steep discount (> 60% off) the price point is okay if you just wanted a mindless action-JRPG meant for young kids, but be aware of the issues i pointed above with keyboard support. Another dumb thing is that the game resolution does not support beyond 1080p. And for those of you who have an 21:9 Monitor the game does not have utilrawide support. PS: The post game after makes me regret my purchase and i wish i never bothered to play this game. The ai companions are so badly programmed that they will opt to suicide into the post-game final bosses attacks. Not only was this infuriating, but the final 3 bosses are essentially copy and paste of one another with a different colour and the attacks become a bullet hell game with very little visual screen clarity making this a very unpleasant experience. For a game that had very little grind for the in-story gameplay the end game is a grinding nightmare for materials for slot in bonus stats gem crafting.

It is a fun game... But it gets increasingly frustrating, as your allies will just face tank every attack from the bosses and die. I'm not sure if I should recommend it or not. Maybe on sale.

This game is better than I expected, but it may only appeal to people who look back fondly on Secret of Mana. Trinity Trigger is an upgrade in gameplay compared to the SoM remake, but it's not a totally modern game. Dungeons and areas tend to be pretty small, but significantly larger than SoM. Combat is still stamina-based, but you can attack around 6 times before being out of stamina. That's compared to attacking once in SoM. The difficulty is also similar to SoM. Getting stun-locked for several hits is the most dangerous part. However, enemies can't be as easily stun-locked in Trinity Trigger, so it's better in that regard. The progression is similar: explore an open area, get to the next town, get through the next dungeon, get some new weapon or power, and repeat. Especially in the early game, this can feel repetitive, but the game throws some twists into this formula by the middle. The story is pretty simple, but not as simple as SoM. The music is by Hiroki Kikuta, who did SoM and other Mana games, including the recent Visions of Mana. I felt the soundtrack was pretty weak early in the game, but it gets much better; there are some great tracks.
Is This a Soulslike?
Stamina-based combat, a dodge roll (with iframes, I think), somewhat limited healing, dungeon crawling, bosses, moderately-paced combat. Is Secret of Mana a proto-Soulslike? By modernizing the combat slightly, Trinity Trigger comes so close to being a Soulslike that I can barely tell if it is or isn't one. It's not as difficult as most Soulslikes, and it's a lot more colorful. But there are some optional bosses that are very difficult, and you have to be constantly upgrading your weapons and Manatite to keep up with the enemies. Is this game much different from Sands of Aura or No Rest for the Wicked? I really don't know.
Caveats
Obnoxious final boss. The final boss highlights just how poor the companion AI is. They'll stubbornly walk into AOE damage pods, refusing to move out of the way, often killing themselves in at once. Strangely enough, the game is better solo anyway. Poorly balanced post game. There seems to be "another journey" with a fair number of quests after defeating the final boss. These almost all suck. It's the same enemies, doing the same attacks, doing 10 times as much damage. Your main character is now a
demi-god
, yet dies faster than ever.
Conclusion
I hesitate to say this game is "very good," but it's a real step up from Secret of Mana. It's good for what it is, but it might not offer the complexity that modern gamers expect. But I really like much of it. On sale, I felt it was worth it for the main game, not counting the annoying final boss and slog of a post game.
