Cosmic Pebble is a challenging precision platformer with rewarding mechanics and a compelling story. I love its unique boomerang-based platforming, thoughtful level design, and emotional narrative. The game offers two difficulty modes and a speedrunning leaderboard, adding replayability for both casual and hardcore players. Its beautiful art style, engaging characters, and immersive soundtrack are standout features, making it highly recommended even for those who don't usually play platformers.

What an enjoyable little game this was! I was originally made aware of this game months before release by a YouTube video the developer posted regarding their experience writing this game's story which found its way into my recommended feed. I thought the video was really interesting, and it encouraged me to add the game to my wishlist despite precision platformers not being my typical genre of choice. I'm really happy that I gave this one a shot, because the final product is a cute and charming romp with some memorable moments. The platforming feels (mostly) tight, new mechanics are regularly introduced throughout the story to keep things fresh, and there are plenty of cookies (this game's equivalent of Celeste strawberries) on each level to give you that extra challenge if you're looking for it. Most of the levels also have an additional challenge which you can complete which seem really tough, which also adds some replay value for those dedicated to achieve 100%. I want to give a special shoutout to this game's narrative. For a plot essentially added as a bonus to a gameplay-first platformer like this, I found the story to be really quite solid. The characters are likeable, the comedy is decent, and there's even some philosophy discussed, which I love to see. It also covers some pretty serious topics, but does so with tact and doesn't feel like it's forcing it too hard. I found myself actually looking forward to seeing where the narrative would go. Is the game perfect? Certainly not. The art does have a style to it and isn't terrible by any means, but definitely feels amateurish. The music is passable but nothing special. I did encounter some weird bugs and annoyances with the controls, as I feel the boomerang can be unpredictable at times. There were also several instances where my spawn point would randomly appear in the previous room, making me redo some sections I had already completed. I also feel like the game struggles a bit with visual clarity, as it often can be hard to tell which walls are safe to touch and which ones aren't, in my opinion. But these didn't do enough to significantly impact my experience, and most bugs were easily worked around. I'm a pretty casual player, and it took me just under 7 hours to beat the entire story with around half of the possible cookies. For $4.99, you really can't go wrong. I'd also like to note that I played the entirety of this game on my Steam Deck and ran into no issues, with no special setup required.
