very slow to progress unless you're willing to 'make a loss' to meet the criteria to advance.. which seems to be the 'embodiment' of this game! you pick up a task to 'go fetch' something. you look around at the various places to see what city produces it. you go there.. only to find it is either too expensive and/or not enough to meet the task criteria.. so you either have to buy enough and then sell it at a loss to 'finish the task' or it fails because you need to find it in another port and you're too far away to get back to the task giver in time! and to top it off.. there is no indication that there is a time limit.. sure it displays a date.. but no context! utter stupidity! then in the 'main quest' you're told to sell x amount to a city.. you start selling that commodity.. but if you buy that commodity from that same city.. it reduces the amount from your total!!?! what idiots thought this was a good idea? oh sure.. you could sell/buy/sell to meet the quest criteria.. but if it is supposedly short on that commodity why is it selling it cheap!!?! and it has one of the worst interfaces I've come across.. honestly what were these ppl thinking? did they even think?!?!
then there is the pirates who only seem to attack your fleets.. the 'city events' only seem to affect your fleets.. when the events actually do anything (as far as I can tell they do absolutely nothing to the 'economy')! the whole 'convoy' thing.. complete waste of time.. you're actually losing money by using them. FAR better to 'micro manage' the whole fleet.. the 'route criteria' is absolutely useless.. not that you need a whole lot of fleets.. in fact if you had too many (unless you built businesses in every port!) you'd never make enough money to maintain them!
but the fact is NOTHING is 'accurate' in this game.. the geography.. the commodities (let alone the artificial prices) and where they are produced, in fact the whole 'market' is a complete joke.. nothing like a 'real simulated economy'.. you KNOW there is something fundamentally wrong with the game when you cant even buy ONE unit of something at the indicated price.. as the price goes up when you try to buy that one unit.. its just RNG rubbish... and an UTTERLY STUPID GAME! and TBH a pretty boring game.. cannot recommend even if on sale

A bit of an older game, but I enjoy it for both being a game you can create routes and passively make money without much thought, and simply let the game run until your economy collapses at some point, or try to micromanage things to your heart's content. If you want to focus on naval battles, you can do so. If you want to focus on trading, you can do that. If you want to take over every city and town in the game, you can. If you want to be friends of all the nations, or a devoted enemy of one or all of them, it's all up to you. I also much, much prefer this game over Port Royale 4's turn based naval combat, which seems like an inexplicable change and vast downgrade from the naval combat in this game.
