OVERVIEW: Some books you read are intellect upgrades, some people you meet have a life changing impact...and, even less titles you play, are game changers, this my friends is the case of Truxton 2 by Toaplan. With courtesy of Bitwave and Clear River Games, Truxton 2 is a masterpiece that returned and aged like the best wine you may ever had the chance to experience. Thus, It tears my heart apart to see the little attention this game has received to the date within the reviews figures scope, and here I am, months after my last game review was posted... to get the record straight about this pillar of the shmup spectrum. Bare in mind before these 59 hours I uncerimoneously invested playing this gem on Steam, I had around double that time in its arcade cabinet original iteration. As time went by after that era, new shmups have entered and exit my life, but Truxton 2 never stopped from shining and claiming in my memory a place as a state of the art product. Pros -» Gameplay: As you progress in the campaign you gradually need to pick speed to assist dodging certain projectiles patterns or even boss mechanics, which feels suited to make you adapt better. From the weapons available, red napalm option seems to be the better balanced for the challenges you encounter. -» Soundtrack and sound effects: The developers listened to the community and currently both are at an extremly satisfying plateau, I would argue, even better than the original. -» Graphics: During first stage you are presented with, what seems to be, the Milky Way in the background...and what comes afterwards doesn't disappoint or could be deemed as lackluster! Playing this jewel you feel like you really are in a fantastic space odissey. Another significant plus is that in all the stages you can always track visually where the opposition shots are coming from, which is a major benefit to acount for, if you played the genre for most of the XXI century. -» Bosses: They get increasingly tougher with maybe the exception of the 4th boss, which from my standpoint, is the hardest. Another argument I would like to make is that none of them is unforgiving, even if a few will require the best effort and preparation you can deliver as a player. -» Replayability: You have an online leaderboard that may help finding others for remote play together, if they use their steam profile ID that is. The quality this game displays is a big factor to return and play it, both as a co-op endeavour or as a solo mission. -» Difficulty: As hard as you may imagine for a shmup but not a bullet hell maze. If you love vertical shmup's you will make it through the 6 phases! Cons -» I am eagerly waiting for the day when the next sequel (Truxton Extreme) is on Steam. SUMMARY: 9/10 Gaming Scale Disclosure: After clearing the main campaign and as I comeback for new sessions or new updates arise by developers, I intend to keep revising this review
