Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II Reviews

This was one of my favorite games growing up. I had a lot of fond memories playing this with my dad when I was young. I always played as Ysuran and he was Dorn. Playing it again after he passed away was hard for a while but I'm determined to finish it two more times, one for each of our favorite characters. One day, I'll pass the torch to my own kids. This is one of those games that can stand the test of time. It's not the worst ports I've played tbh. Just play with an XBOX One controller and you'll be fine!

I was playing this on a PS2 emulator and I thought I would give the "updated" steam version a try. From what I can tell, they didn't add anything new (spells or otherwise, ball lightning from the necro is fake) but did remove some things (like cheat menu access). The textures are improved but you can't set resolution or texture quality so it's a guess as to "how much". Sadly, the game still stutters in places (frustratingly only hindering your character not the bosses). Finally, I have to completely agree with anyone who said that it's too expensive for a remake. This is just a sad effort for $30.

I'm not really sure where to start with this, this game is riddled with nostalgia and memories for me personally so I'm absolutely biased. Graphically this game is about what you would expect for a 20 year old game with slightly upgraded visuals. Stylistically it looks great but it could leave something to be desired depending on how much of a stickler you are for graphics, I believe the other aspects make up for it personally. Combat is great for a classic hacknslash, each character has unique abilities, different weapon strengths and allow for varying builds without any class feeling particularly bad. Weapon combat feels solid and responsive and magic feels, well, magical. Story wise, its a hacknslash from 20 years ago its on par if not above average for stories of that time, but does not hold up very well to current titles. Overall this is a fun game that will give you probably 60ish hours of playtime if you play multiple characters and do multiple playthroughs, it is absolutely worth buying and even more so if on sale. In reality it's about a 7/10 but with my own biases and nostalgia I personally give it a 9/10.
