Pros: + Insanely fun turn-based combat with several battles you have to be really strategic to win + Fascinating story that spans the entire in-game continent + Challenging choices that have real consequences and shape the end of the game + Interesting conviction mechanic that shapes dialogue options and major story outcomes Cons: - The dialogue can be stiff and awkward, which makes it harder to get emotionally attached to the characters. - Cut scenes are sometimes stacked one after another, and you can't save during them, so if you stayed up late to finish a fight, you're going to get stuck wading through dialogue scenes after and staring at the clock tick later.

Triangle Strategy is a beautiful piece of work in terms of both gameplay and story-writing. The gameplay stays true to the classic SJRPG format - it is grueling and fun with a great variety of character types to choose from to suit your play style. You get *a lot* of freedom of choice and your choices affect the story itself. Multiple endings and NewGame+ features offer replay-ability and are a nice addition. The animations and soundtrack can be a bit repetitive though... lot of recycling/reuse by the dev team which detracts from the experience a bit. This is probably my favorite SJRPG next to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I really hope they continue this series and give us some more entries!

This has been a tough game to review. Triangle Strategy is TRPG-flavored, but it lacks substance. On the hard difficulty, the combat is at least exciting. But: the game is soulless. The story does not have the human touch. The writing is not good enough to justify hours of dialogue scenes. The player does not have any meaningful choices in terms of combat strategy, inventory loadout, etc. All the solutions to problems are given before the problems are presented. There is no friendly fire. Combat roles are so varied that folks are not around each other enough for formation-based abilities and items to be used efficiently. Crucially, you will glean everything there is to get out of the game in one[strike] playthrough[/strike] reading. It will not reveal any new understanding or wisdom to you upon later[strike] plays[/strike] readings, or as you grow older, or as you experience life more. It is simply too shallow.

Yes, there is a lot of conversation in this game but unlike other games, it doesn't make you feel unnecessary. A game with a simple world setting, just 3 kingdoms fighting over iron and salt but with a really exciting plot.

The entire game is 10 minutes of fighting proceeded, followed by and interrupted mid-fight by 1+hour (minimum) of cutscenes where characters repeatedly vomit the same exposition over and over. The game is named "Triangle Strategy" because you will be forced to read the same tedious exposition 3 times per chapter, at minimum. Pixel art concept is abused to death. Voice acting is solid but is ruined by the egregious pauses/thought bubbles of the 2d characters. It is the worst of both worlds of voice acting and trying to emote 2d pixel sprites. Either way, you will be forced to read the same exposition and broken character growth over and over again. The voice acting is actually pretty good but when combined with 1990's level of sprite emotes, the endless cutscenes become exceedingly tedious. The pixel graphics are standard fare. I welcome AI so I never have to see eye-watering pixel filters spewed over lazy art. The story is standard "le church is epic bad" tropes. Tactics games from 20+ years ago make this an embarrassment. Some more recent games illustrate even more how bad this game is by comparison. Realizing one must play the entire game 4-5 times to get all endings, characters and dialogues is insulting to the customer. Long past are the days we could play a game and 100% it in one playthrough vs artificially forcing us to play BS branching paths due to lack of ability to create a complete, coherent story that can be accessed in one, long satisfying game. These mental midgets couldn't comprehend 200 hours of content in one playthrough and instead add artificial, contrived "decisions" that rely on 99% of the same gameplay with one screen of difference at The End. This is a $19.99 game at best, better if you can get it below that price point. Apparently I'm supposed to play through the same endless exposition 5+ times to complete all the useless chat boxes. No thanks. Glad to see other companies stepping up to fill the gap Square refuses to. EDIT: after playing the last chapter, I am beyond disappointed and moved to laughter. The characters seemingly start he game with severe head wounds that keep them from thinking or doing anything sensible and in the last chapter the head wounds apparently develop sepsis and all reason and logic is completely gone. Characters start making decisions that have no basis in reality or would EVER be made by the character. The plot relies on characters being very stupid then developing into full blown schizophrenic behavior.

Already beat this game on Switch, but got it again because I enjoyed it so much. The game is definitely story HEAVY, so be prepared for a lot of dialogue, but the combat is fantastic.

This game is more positive than negative. If you like tactics/turn-based then this is an obvious must-try in my opinion. Heads up, there is so much talking and cut scenes. Also, there isn't a job system that I love about these kinds of games, everyone has their assigned "job" which can be good or bad depending on your preference.

I would absolutely recommend this game to fans of turn-based tactics games that feature story-telling, progression systems, and branching narrative paths as main selling points. There is a fair bit of asset re-use throughout this game through the 'Mental Mock Battle' system, but by in large this game is an excellent single playthrough. The music is quite good, but I really wish some of the most-repeated tracks would have arrangements or variation. You'll hear the 'Encampment Music' theme in your dreams after a full game of leveling up, tweaking stats/gear, etc. Many games have this issue, but it's something I wanted to mention. There's also a NewGame+ feature to allow you to roll over your progression into a fresh story to explore other paths missed the first time around. There's nothing world-breaking here, but if you can pick it up for a decent discount I think you'll enjoy yourself. It exceeded my modest expectations.

Great game if you like tactical RPGs/strategy games. I do want to elaborate a bit on the story everyone seems to praise, and maybe temper the overwhelming positive narrative a bit. It's a great video game story--perhaps one of the best I've played--but it's not a great story on its own. The actual story (characters, themes, setting, plot) itself is fine. Pretty standard western medieval fantasy stuff. Some twists are moderately interesting, whereas others are just beyond absurd. Minor spoilers, but one country is somehow able to sneak multiple armies right to the capital of another country, completely by surprise. Note: the main countries in this story are only 30 years removed from a terrible war with each other. It beggars belief that the country on the receiving end of this ass whooping would have no scouts or intel about neighboring troop movements. This is just one of many examples of mediocre to bad plot elements. However, what makes the story a great video game story is that your choices actually matter! The plot meaningfully changes based on major decisions you make, and other things--like character recruitment--changed based on the accumulation of minor decisions you make. So, would I read the novelization of this story? Absolutely not. Am I, however, eagerly awaiting finishing my first play through so I can play again and make different choices.

Triangle Strategy is a tactical RPG that masterfully combines classic turn-based combat with a gripping political drama set in the fractured continent of Norzelia. You step into the shoes of Serenoa Wolffort, the noble heir caught in a web of alliances, betrayals, and resource-driven conflict between salt and iron factions. The game places a strong emphasis on story and player choice, weaving intricate relationships and moral dilemmas that directly impact how the narrative unfolds. These choices aren’t just cosmetic — they shape the fate of entire houses and the alliances you can forge or break. The combat is a thoughtfully designed grid-based system that rewards strategic planning and clever use of terrain. Elevation and positioning are key elements, with high ground offering significant advantages, while obstacles and cover play a tactical role in movement and attack options. Each character brings unique abilities and roles, encouraging experimentation and customization to find synergistic team setups. The battles strike a balance between challenge and accessibility, with encounters that push you to think several moves ahead without overwhelming you with complexity. One of the game’s standout features is the “Scales of Conviction” system, which introduces a dynamic layer of decision-making by having you debate and persuade your allies on critical matters. These moments add weight to the story by making you actively negotiate your moral standpoint, affecting who stays loyal and what story branches open up. While innovative and engaging, the system can sometimes feel a bit unclear, leaving players unsure why certain choices sway characters or outcomes in unexpected ways, which may require some trial and error. Visually, Triangle Strategy impresses with its unique HD-2D style, blending nostalgic pixel art characters with rich 3D backgrounds and beautifully rendered environments. The attention to detail creates a vivid world that feels alive, from bustling towns to war-torn battlegrounds. The atmospheric soundtrack enhances the emotional tone throughout, featuring stirring orchestral arrangements that complement both quiet story moments and intense battles, drawing players deeper into the experience. The game’s pacing is deliberate, with a strong focus on narrative and dialogue, especially in early chapters, which may feel slow to some players. However, this slow burn allows for a more immersive experience as you become invested in the characters and political intrigue. Combat sequences gradually ramp up in intensity and complexity, keeping the gameplay fresh as new mechanics and enemy types are introduced. Overall, Triangle Strategy delivers a rich and rewarding tactical RPG experience that appeals to fans of story-driven strategy games. Its blend of meaningful choices, deep combat mechanics, and captivating art style make it a memorable journey through a war-torn world filled with shifting loyalties and high stakes. While it demands patience and attention to its layered systems, the payoff is a nuanced and immersive adventure that stays with you long after the final battle. Rating: 8/10
