Favourite bullet hell.
The official Touhou games are great because them being around means fanprojects like this can happen.
There's the right mix of 'I can overcome this, just need a moment to figure it out and get better' and 'Oh~ but if I can get just one lucky run, get the items just right and have it all line up perfectly'.
The challenge modifiers are great, picking out a bunch of them while trying to keep it all balanced feels like it's own layer of putting together a build yet I have no idea if just going without any of them would work better.
And I'm still somehow not super used to arrow key movement so having optional mouse controls feels so good it's like cheating.
But in turn, could even it out by bringing the 'easier' controls to a harder difficult.
Or perhaps, even MORE challenge mods.
The characters act very believably even at the far extremes of being ridiculous goofballs or being in the middle of having world shattering revelations.
Which by the way my GOODNESS the story.
Used to just go up to stage 4 and even then it was "How in the heck does oh wait actually that makes sense".
Later on, came back and got to stage 5 and it's "oh I'm sorry, WHAT!? wait, but that could explain... oh".
Haven't even seen what's in stage 6 now but noticing the trend I'll just preemptively "I'M SORRY WHAT!?" because I mean... no idea what could happen from here but if anything can..
yea, nah, it'd be better to see for yourself
Throw this in the pile of reviews going "omg Yumemi&Chiyuri! :D" because they're right! those two are great!
but also real quick, one of the items, 'Len'en Mentioned!!!'
It was almost comfortable having a favourite that was pretty much definitely not gonna show up again while not even being as famous for that as someone like Mima.
Sense of completeness to it? I dunno
But then just showing up unannounced it's like "Oh okay so of course Reimu's playable. Sumireko's here, that's neat- omg Yumemi&Chiyuri! :D But why these characters? Feels like kinda random picks for-" but now I think I found the thread between them. Trying to figure this out as it's happening feels like the middle point between solving a mystery and being a helpless bystander stuck in a suspended state of anticipation about to watch what might be a horrific train wreck.
If I had to have a complaint.
It felt a bit easy to snowball some light thievery into constant mass robberies and get so many items that by stage 5 it became less about 'try to win' and more 'try not to crash the game', though I have no idea if that's already been dealt with.
And even then, there's greater than zero things later on that don't care how strong you've gotten and possibly get more difficult as you do, and making the game easier/harder works in ways that feel correct, like it's less that you need an even more broken build but that getting that broken build becomes harder in the first place and it'll have a whole extra set of problems to figure out.
Still surprised so few people know about this game.
It went from 'The game I'm super excited for, but I know better than to get too invested before it's out' to 'It's out and it's even better than I thought it'd be' genuinely could have sworn it must have been some big popular hit before noticing there's barely anyone here.
Does that just tend to be the case with fanworks like this?
Wait, is it because it's in English while so much of the fandom isn't? Oh but translating all those jokes would be actual pain. Like how would the whole Mi-ke, Mike, Michael thing even-... whatever

Lensed Night Sky is probably my favorite Touhou fangame, and I mean that with absolute sincerity. This is a seriously fun take on a Touhou roguelike, leaning way more into the genre than Touhou 18 / 18.5 did. The writing is humorous, the art looks good, it's generally presented rather well, there is a plethora of items which can all help make really interesting builds, the music's good, and the character cast is fairly unique. Sumireko and Chiyuri & Yumemi are odd choices to have as playables (alongside Reimu of course), but they're really cool! Chiyuri in particular is such a little shit, I love her.
This game is hard. I suck. I got to stage 5 on normal once, and recently finished the game on easy. But this is in no way a criticism, as I feel the sheer difficulty combined with the crap ton of items just adds extra replayability to the game, which is cool!
Lensed Night Sky also has a bunch of endings! Every stage, and every boss, has a unique ending specific to the character you're playing as - this is yet another thing which adds to replay value. I really like the character profile stuff in the menu, alongside the fact that you can just. Read the endings. And the ingame dialogue too, actually. Genuinely a really nice touch to have all of that available from the menu!
Spoilers for stage five/six:
Stage 5's... lack of existing, really, was cool. It felt foreboding. And then the reveal with the earth. Seriously not a turn I had expected the game to take, but it was awesome! Yorihime is a tough fight, but her theme is so damn good. This is also when I understood why Keine and Akyuu were portrayed the way they were. Akyuu commenting on your number of losses was pretty funny. Anyway, stage 6. I didn't expect Yukari. But I can't say I was overly surprised, either. The stage itself is rather pretty, I like the way the background is done. Reimu's portrait art changing was cool. The whole Yukari fight was cool. I was expecting a Necrofantasia or a Night Falls ~ Evening Star, but instead we got something better. Awakening From Fantasy ~ Immaterial Dream is a wonderful song. I didn't realize it was an Eternal Shrine Maiden cover until a good way through the song, and the part with the Maiden's Capriccio motif was so fucking cool. I think this is by far my favorite song in the game so far, it's seriously so good and I legitimately don't have words to describe my feelings on it. So damn good.
As of right now, I've only cleared the game as Reimu, so I'm unsure how the other characters' dialogue beyond stage three is. But, I really dig it. The characters are all written accurate to their canon selves (okay maybe except Chiyuri but this is infinitely funnier), and stage 5/stage 6 especially are rather impactful.
Please, play this game. It is seriously so good. It's got charm, it's got a cool visual style, it's got nice music. It deserves to be so much more popular than it currently is. Thank you for continuing to work on LNS, devs. This is such a cool game and I can't wait to see how 1.0 will be.
