It feels more like a board game—but in a good way. It has simple rules and mechanics, but a tricky learning curve and strong replayability.

It's a really fun, simple strategy game which can be played in one sitting. All the different maps and civilizations give you plenty of varied content to play, even though the base mechanics never change it's enough variation to make each challenge feel fresh. My one criticism is the victory conditions. Points earned towards victory feel very divorced from actual gameplay incentives. A lot of the time the key to victory isn't to continue to fight with the other Empires, it's just to stop spending money so it can stockpile, or to buy techs you don't need, or build some unnecessary armies. And it's hard to stop an opponent from meeting their victory conditions, you're better off racing to complete them yourself rather than attacking the current point leader.

I don't think it's a *bad* game, but it really isn't a 4X like it claims to be. By shortening the playtime to a single sitting, they cut out enough that's closer to a strategy board game. It felt fine, but relatively shallow.
