Really fun with a friend, plays pretty good. Does have some "jank" but it could be part of the game since it is called Nostalgaia after all.

This review is going to be my thoughts as they come, so here we go. I played as a Randomaster, and let me tell you: the Luck system is broken if you commit to it. Critical hits really make a difference. I don’t understand people complaining about short-range weapons — I finished the game using the Dagger of Cycles, which I believe is the shortest weapon in the game, and I barely had range issues. Sometimes with bosses, yes, but once you get used to staying face to face, you stop noticing it. One thing I didn’t like is how the game doesn’t explain what certain abilities do, especially with Luck. What’s “Flow State”? What new ability did I unlock? What does it actually do? You’re just supposed to be happy you got something. Weapon variety was decent, although almost no weapons scale naturally with Dexterity unless you hone them into it. That’s why I stuck with the Dagger of Cycles — it had innate Dex scaling, and once honed, it was nearly an S-rank in Dex. Armor felt a bit lacking, especially for lighter builds like mine. Enemies were well-designed, with clearly telegraphed attacks and solid placement. That said, their AI was weak: they’re nearly blind if you walk, and you can sneak behind them easily. Their aggro range is massive, though — even after upgrading stealth. I played using parries, but only the starter shield allows parrying, which felt pretty lame. Parry timing also needs to be super early — I got bullied in the tutorial because of that. But once you master it, like Luck, it’s broken. When you riposte, nearby enemies freeze for about two seconds, which is enough time to finish the riposte, get behind another enemy, backstab them... and repeat. Despite sounding critical, I really liked the game. Enemy encounters were fun, bosses were creative, and the gimmicks worked well. NPC questlines were a bit vague to follow, just like in the Dark Souls saga. The Remembering system was a really cool concept. You can clearly see inspiration from Dark Souls 1–3 and Elden Ring — nostalgic enough to feel familiar, but original enough to stand on its own. The artwork and aesthetic are gorgeous if you like retro games. Combat, despite being "a bunch of sticks," felt fluid — unlike Dark Souls 2 (F--- you, DS2). It’s the right amount of playtime if this is one of your first Soulslikes. Give it a go!

This game is simply annoying. No other way around it. The game in itself is fine, but the achievements? the questlines? the NPCs? the hitboxes? Simply frustrating. Beat the game without the help from other NPCs, that doesn't mean beating the game, that means doing a questline while ignoring some NPCs for the boss fights. How do I know? Because people complained and devs did a bethesda and said, oh no, this is a feature. Speed run achievement cannot be done on new game+. The storylines cannot be mixed in new game+ (remembering and unburdening playthroughs are save file exclusive)... The game is in general OK, but I've spent WAY TOO MUCH time on a simple game, and I am going to get all the achievements, because it's fucking personal. BUT OH BOY DO I HATE THIS GAME.

The level design is solid, and the humor can be genuinely funny - though it feels very early 2010s (“I like trains”). There are lots of cool mechanics, but the technical execution is just awful. Somehow, despite having co-op, the game’s mechanics aren’t built for it at all. Add in horribly janky hitboxes, a sluggish overall pace, and, as the cherry on top, a DLC that crams in every single cancerous trope of souls-likes.

Thoroughly enjoyed this game and I'm now on my second play through! Love all the references and cryptic clues (even if some are too difficult for me XD ). There are a few bugs here or there, but nothing that marks the experience. It's a great Souls like and something that praises gaming's history. If you like nostalgia for the origins of modern day gaming AND Souls likes? This is a winner

The Last Hero of Nostalgaia is a clear homage to Dark Souls 1, blending satire writing, tons of gaming references, and a distinctive mix of 2D and 3D visuals. Highly recommend for fans of Souls-like games.

I have never laughed so hard at a game this interesting. It is in fact a soulslike, and it is extreamly funny. 10/10 would die again and again

Very creative game, with tons of content, Things it lack and sucks because of it is quick teleportation between zones it only has a "pin" single location allowing you to only travel to that pinned location but you can't fast travel between locations otherwise, so you can only teleport to a single location and nothing else. I have spent 50% of my gameplay backtracking to previous locations, and the layout and shortcuts are really confusing because most of them are inside tunnels that you can't clearly see, more so, these quick travels are usually hidden or hard to find, reason of which I rarely use them, as I would spend more time backtracking to these hidden shortcuts than taking the actual long main path. The other problem I got is with LONG corridors meant to be "shortcuts" to previous zones, you spend good bunch of minutes walking on a shortcut tunnel. Beside lack of teleportation, the game is good and worth playing. So, turns out that after you
defeat a boss
, you unlock teleportation, but its super
later in the game
and at that point you would use it like one time because you are basically at the
very end of the game
already, very poor game design choice. Its so badly timed I literally not used it even once.

Let me start by saying I would absolutely recommend this game. Combat 7-8/10 Story 10/10 That being said, the last few areas were a little annoying but I don't know if that was part of the parody of "Souls" games, so...

This game is fantastic! The map design, the satire, the plot, the little quality of life improvements are genuine plus points. Although unpolished this game delivers a great and short experience into what I would expect from a souls like. Pros- - The map and world building is absolutely awe inspiring. The interconnectedness never makes you feel like you are switching between rooms with loading screens. It is almost seamless. - The lore and plot are handed out to the player really well. There is just enough balance between environmental lore and actual plot lore to make the world make sense. - The references to other games and pop culture are super fun. Few cons- - There are side quests that can be missed easily, but then those side quests unlock further side quests, so you are essentially locked out of multiple quest lines just because you miss one side quest. - The hit box system is janky. Some objects have weird or glitchy hitboxes - The target lock-on feature doesn't work correctly everytime, and 20% of the time you end up locking on to an enemy in the far distance instead of the enemy thats closer. This has induced multiple salty moments. - The map design is great, but some sections involve entirely too much running. Maybe if there were shortcut/staging area paths laid out to shorten the travel time, during the later stages of the game, it would have been a more user friendly experience. Overall, great game, worth the money, good souls-like to begin with if you don't like souls-like games or want to try something simpler. 8/10
