if your a JRPG fan who loves a good story and fun combat, then this game along with Zero is a must. i would strongly suggest starting at the sky series, for the much needed context. Also i just want to say the combat and character builds in Azure get a lot deeper with the introduction of the Master Quartz, i was able to make some pretty broken builds and had a lot of fun experimenting. A lot of people say this is one of their favorites in the Trails series, and I agree.

Trails to Azure overstays its welcome a little more than even the longer trails games before it, but when it clicks, it clicks. Chapter 4 is a tearjerker, and while chapter 5 goes on for a looooooooooooong time, I would say the payoff is pretty worth it.

Pros: - Great characters and story as usual. - I liked how intelligently written the main character, Lloyd is. He would often question plot-holes in the story that other JPRGs would simply try to brush aside. - Recipes/collectables are now way more visible and you mainly learn them through books instead of talking to random people like in the previous game. - You now have a car to fast travel all over the map. - The addition of “Master Quartz” additionally allows you to create different unique builds to suit you play style. Cons: - Wish they did not mirror-image character 2D portraits during the cut-scenes as it would result in weird discrepancies against the 3D models e.g. characters eye-patch would show on the wrong side etc. - The “Pom Pom Party” minigame was ass. How do you fuck up Tetris? - Some of the “villains” are way too cartoonishly evil and their motives are never explained other than them following some conveniently vague “Phantasmal Blaze Plan”. - My dudes have to run/drive across the whole of Crossbell while the secret society, Ouroboros, can conveniently teleport wherever they want. It is never explained how they do it and too often, is used as a crutch to make them appear and disappear as needed for the story to progress. I don’t understand why they bother fighting at all when they can just teleport someone into the Sun or something. - Absolutely hate that they decided to sneak in a pointless betrayal sub-plot in the last chapter.
There was ZERO foreshadowing that Grimwood was the mastermind behind all the events. His motives don’t even make sense. Apparently, he got the big sad after his family got killed in some terrorist attack so he decides to mastermind a false flag attack on his city to create more broken families. He is also so insignificant to the overall story that he is not even mentioned in the epilogue.
Just because Trails in the Sky had a good betrayal sub-plot that actually made sense does not mean that EVERY Legend of Heroes game needs a betrayal sub-plot. Overall, 7/10. The last good Legend of Heroes game. Wish the series did not jump the shark with the Trails of Cold Steel series with its shitty writing and pointless betrayal sub-plots.
