Audio quit working and I couldn't get it back. Auto-battling exists because the battles are trivial.
Yawn.

More like Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred tacked-on Mini Games.
The core gameplay peaks at "fine", the story is somewhere between tolerable and good, the voice acting is consistently well done. The mini games are ALL bad, with the Cooking mini game and Beigoma being particularly fucking miserable while also being mandatory if you want the true ending. They could salvage the card mini game with a little polish, but every single other mini game would need a complete overhaul. I genuinely wanted to like this game, but they put so many terrible OTHER games between me and the game I came to play that I just can't recommend it.

having all those characters to choose from dosent matter when the battle system is so dull. unless its a boss fight you are always better off just letting the game play it self. the story seems kind of good but i dont have it in me to slog through the dull gameplay just to see the story. the voice acting is hit and miss. gar was amazing, noah was okay and the one healer lady u get at the beginning was funny to listen to. i was pretty underwhelmed with the rest. the weapon upgrading system was a missed oppurtunity to add customization. the partys balance can be fun to theory craft with but it just dosent matter what your party is unless its a boss fight. magic is wayyy too expensive. its punishing to even use because you will be out of mp in 3 - 4 casts and then when you get to the boss fight and too bad. my last gripe is the inventory management is absolutely atrocious. i regret buying this game, it looks really good on paper but failed to hit almost every single mark. one super positive for this game is the art style. its not revolutionary, but its pleasant to look at and fits the vibe the game has going for it very well.

If I could use a single word to describe it I would say - dissapoininting.
I won't talk about combat or character or even the supremely shit minigames as there are plenty other reviews that mention those. I will instead focus on the story and yes - there will be some spoilers.
The biggest problem with the story is that whoever wrote it did not understand that what makes a good bad vs good story is the villain. And this game basically uses the "oh hes evil" as an excuse for the 99% of it. Yes - 99%
For the majority of the game you have no idea why are you even fighting this guy - he has no motivation, no reason, no nothin'. Well at least until the last 30 minutes or so when he gives his reason. And you know what? It's a good reason - good enough that I almost agree with him. Like I can question his methods sure but his personal motivation is actually a pretty good one. Single problem here and I will capslock it just so that it rings properly - YOU ONLY FIND IT OUT IN THE LAST 30 MINUTES OF THE GAME.
WHY?!
It's late. Too late. Way too god darn late. In fact it's even worse this way.
It feels like the first draft of the story was presented and they just took it without revising it, without fixing and polishing and just... nothing? Playing a bad game is one thing. Playing a dissapointing one is worse. Way worse.
The final duel can go screw itself.
And I know I said I wasn't gonna mention it but I lied - fuck beigoma. I literally never said something like that before but I really hope whoever designed this never works in game design ever again.

A'yup, I wouldn't recommend this game for 80% of the voice acting, alone. Other 20% were some wonderful people, but the vast majority think that VA is simply reading the words like they're in school. Part of this is the terrible writing, but even beyond that, no amount of writing could have helped some of these characters. Was being able to put your own voice in the game a reward tier in Patreon or something?

Suikodem has 3 different mechanics compared to other RPGs that none have done like or reached SUIKODEN's level of quality, they are 108 characters with stories, some deep and others shallow "guys, use common sense there are 108 characters" the evolution of your castle and finally the army battle system in everything else it is a standard RPG but this game only manages to do a single good mechanic which is the castle and even so it is small and has no depth compared to the castle in Suikoden V or II, even III, which is the richest in the sense of looking like something alive, the army mechanics are terrifying, it seems like they took everything that went wrong in the Suikoden series and put them together in this game and out of the 108 characters they are extremely easy to recruit since once you recruit the "investigator" who tells you where the NPCs are, the description of the locations are always the same for example "go to the city that has a water wheel" and this is always repeated while V was difficult to get everyone, this one shouldn't even have to go to the location to recruit since it is literally talking and automatically recruiting with most of the characters, and there is an abyss in the narrative of the story, it grows and develops well until out of absolutely nothing the empire starts to lose in a forced and meaningless way after part of the game
In short, it's a mediocre to bad RPG, it adds absolutely nothing, the protagonist is more lost than blind in a shootout and has no motivation, the female protagonist is generic and the blonde protagonist is the only one who has motivation but obviously doesn't develop it, if you want to play a good suikodem or a game similar to it, go back to the original series.
P.S I skipped many other horrible factors of the game such as mini games, narrative, map design and scenarios, rare items that only have a chance to appear in the store every 30 minutes in IRL and RNG among other problems

9/10 for classic JRPGs.
Pros:
- Good Voice Acting
- Wasn't bored due to fun mini-games
- Great Characters
- Good Successor to Suikoden
Cons:
- Annoying "rare" items you need to grind/time-based grind
- Linear Skill Tree until you get mid-game/late-game
- Can't explore much of the side characters, would be cool if they have their own side quest/companion quest
- Linear story telling

A good game that is very close to Suikoden experience. I like the story and the gameplay in general. Although it's REALLY hard to say that I would recommend this game to other people due to so many downside to this game that really ruined my experience. Apparently someone got dropped as a baby and they created a horrible game design to ruin this supposed-to-be great game.
+ Closest game that you can get to Suikoden at core.
+ Decent story, if not generic.
+ Good soundtrack.
+ Great voice acting.
+ Nice art style.
- Everything is so painfully slow, as if it was designed this way to time-padding the game. Fighting animation, movement speed, field combat speed, even conversation bubbles, and many more.
- Duel is not as good, designed to be more cinematic rather than for gameplay. It works especially for the final part of the game, but it's redundant on the rest of the game.
- Field combat is horrendous. Slow speed, no tactical design whatsoever. Might as well have Suikoden 1 style combat as it was better.
- A vast array of game features are tied to RNG. Guild missions? RNG. Fishing? RNG. Eggfoot racing? RNG. Buying recipe? RNG. Work in Konami for far too long and all you know about game design is gambling.
- Horrible drop rate.
- Very bad at explaining game mechanics.
- Terrible mini-games. Most of them are pointless and serve only as time waster. The only good one is the card game .
- While everything in the game is extra-slow, somehow the dev decided to make the credits roll quickly. You'll barely have time to read the epilogues. So they know how to make something fast after all, albeit in the wrong section of the game.
- Poor English localization.

Complaints:
- Terrible mini games, especially the necessary ones to recruit characters. No joke, I hate all the mini games so much. Especially the beyblade bullshit game.
- Can't change the control / button mapping...cmon you're not some 1 man dev and this was released in 2024.
The negative reviews I read from steam can be applied to all other Suikoden games. Cmon. If you love Suikoden, you'd love this one. There's even complaint about enemy encounter, which I think the rate is already kinda lower compared to other JRPG.
Other than that, this game is amazing.
- Story 7/10
- Mini Games: 2/10
- Combat 8.5/10 You can feel the need of proper strategy in battles, especially early game.
- Duel scenes 10/10
- Art 10/10
- Music 8.5/10
Overall 8/10, it can be better but it's already amazing as it is. Maybe just make the main char walks faster without the running support guy.
