From the creators of Sonic Smackdown: ArcForged, comes Head 2 Head, A simple 2D fighter collectathon where you collect tons of heads to mix and match to create various playstyles. The game has a very unique concept and execution, which I will further elaborate into this review.
Gameplay: 4/10
The combat itself feels very off-putting. As someone who is extremely used to motion inputs, manually dashing, air-dashing and using 4 attack buttons, this game feels so awkward for me. And before you comment, this isn't a skill issue, it's a design choice I can't get behind. The game controls as follows: You can dash left and right by pressing said directions once. This can be done both on the ground and in the air. While sparring a very easy to grasp control layout, you also have access to 5 attack buttons: Strike (X/Square), Jump (Y/Triangle), Anti-Air (B/Circle), Projectile (A/X) and Skull (RB/R1). Pressing Skull twice results in a super, and pressing it once with a corresponding attack button performs a different string of attacks. While the simplicity is great and all, everything feels super off-putting. Nothing feels natural about the combo flow of this game, thus making combos feel awkward. If we were to compare this to say: Sonic Smackdown, Origin of Storms or UMVC3, this simple layout design choice isn't for me. The lack of crouch, motion inputs, meter or proper burst and an L M H S button layout annoys me. If this game had traditional elements from SSD or OoS, like motion inputs, double tap for dashing or 2 button presses, I would play the hell out of this. But as of now, I don't like playing it. While the gameplay itself, at least, isn't that fun, it isn't to say it's not interesting. The features for this game are pretty unique. Being able to change entire UI colours, fighter colours and stage colours seperately, it feels nice combining various colours. On top of that, the elements of a roguelike and a collectathon put into a fighting game sounds nuts, but he made it happen, and for that I give props. Each head you collect grants different stats, as for the stats themselves I don't quite know how each statistic works. With the ability to mix and match heads and bodies (bodies are basically characters, and each one is different), there's a pretty healthy amount of combinations. You can roll skulls to unlock new heads, but it uses skulls as a currency for a gacha machine, which is cool for a game like this.
Graphics: 8/10
Persona meets League of Super Evil, A very interesting blend of minimalist artstyle and cell shading in one game. Nice, vibrant and a little edgy.
Modes: 5/10:
As of now, we don't have access to Arcade or Head Hunter mode, but we do get Survival (earn skulls with it to buy more heads), Online, Versus, Free Play and Head Case, which is where you can view your collection or roll for some heads. Nothing crazy yet so, I'll give it a modest score.
Story/Characters: N/A
Story doesn't matter here. Won't count it.
Music: 9/10
Composed by the one and only TNHGameRemixes, composer for SSD, OoS and H2H. He makes amazing music, go check him out!
Online: ?/10
I put a question mark here since no one is currently playing this game online. I've tried multiple times to matchmake with other people, but with no luck. From what I see on steam though, it does have GGPO rollback netcode, which is a CRUCIAL aspect to all fighting games. It's great to see it with GGPO, so this is a good sign.
Overall: 5/10
Controls feel super clunky, unfamiliar and strange, the concept itself is really interesting, and the features here are nice. If the game had traditional controls like a regular 2D fighter, I'd give this game more time to play, but for now, it's not worth it in my opinion.

I am currently having fun with this game! I also love the legendaries being based on other games I love how they also included a head from arcus chroma!
I Can't wait for this game to grow, I just wish i can do versus against the AI and pick the head and body for the bots because I kinda bought the game for that, but Survival is fun.
This game does get boring doing survival over and over because of the quick difficulty spike so I cant wait for Versus mode options especially like turning off the timer or making it one round or disabling head stat bonuses for fairness in Versus.
In conclusion this game has lots of purpose to be a very awesome fighting game that me and other people will play for lots of time, I just think this game is too early in development for me to play everyday so I play this game every now and then until the next monthly update comes.

I AM THE FASTEST
Also this game is really fun so you should buy it. Combos feel really good and the game allows for lots of creativity. The music is also great especially once you get farther into survival mode.

I... wasn't expecting this?
When a friend of mine reccomended me Sonic Smackdown I went for a little digging of the team behind this fan game. Turns out they were working on other projects, including this funky-looking one called Head 2 Head.
I really liked Sonic Smackdown, so I went and bought Head 2 Head afterwards. I mean, 5 bucks for an indie fighting game, I'm going to play a few rounds than never touch it again right?
Boy was I wrong.
The pure core gameplay of Head 2 Head is the most fun I ever had with a game in years. I am genuinly shocked at how good this game actually is. And there is only local play and survival game modes at the moment!
Fantastic soundtrack, a bold artstyle that just works...
ArcForged you have all my respect (and my money), go crazy with this and all your future projects I love what you do.

its really early but id say keep a eye out as it develops or buy it so you can follow its growth. the only thing that bugs me is no moving without dashing and jump is a natural forward jump which i need to get used too
