Amazing game with lots of personality. Gunplay is smooth, and the mechanics feel rewarding to master. There are some specifics to certain quests that are finicky, but for the most part can be overlooked in my opinion. A lot of care was put into the world that this game presents, and its hard not to admire it.

It's a good game which I enjoyed through until the end. Nothing in particular blew me away. The weapons were fun to use and the variety of skills, items, and weapons allowed for some fun combos. But still, nothing too impressive. The stealth wasn't very good design in my opinion, but you get used to it and it doesn't seem so bad. Just mundane. I played with normal difficulty, which started off at the level of toughness I like, but it didn't last long before the game became too easy for my taste. So, after I beat the game and tried the DLC (Dead Man's Promise), I tried the hardest difficulty. That ended up being much more difficult than what I'm used to, but I really enjoyed being bullied. Up until the final boss of the DLC. Because of the game mode I was in, I couldn't buy ammo at the shops. I ran out of ammo before beating the boss, and the boss isn't very "melee accommodating". It would either take me a long time to melee the boss, or take me a long time to scavenge for enough ammo. I didn't respect the game enough to do that, so I quit right there. Still, I really enjoyed most of the game. If it looks like a game you'd like, it probably is. Just try not to make the same mistakes as I did. If playing on the "no ammo in shops" difficulty, store all the spare ammo you collect in your chest, and/or save a ranged melee weapon.

Fun little game, had a blast playing it. Only complaint is the enemy placement can be a bit ridiculous at times and a tad overwhelming. Loved the western atmosphere the game had and the open world was fun to explore.

Pros: -Really cool premise -Decent art style -Some pretty cool enemy designs -Good animations Cons: -Sub-Skyrim stealth gameplay -Brain-dead AI (People say the AI is dumb on purpose, but that doesn't make it a good decision) -Holy fetch quests -The game feels really empty. Exploring is rarely rewarding. -Punishing, but not necessarily fair imo Conclusion: Go play Gloomwood. Seriously. Gothic horror, immersive stealth, Gianni Matragrano VA. While the game still isn't finished, Gloomwood manages to do everything Blood West is trying to achieve so much better. Definitely some really solid work here though, and I can kind of see what people like about it. I would recommend this though.

Super punishing, the character is forcefully slow and enemies don't miss a hit. Forced difficulty is not one of my favorite mechanics. The game had potential but ends up being very boring because of these problems, in my opinion. What's more, the game needs some touches and even releases an expensive dlc that for those who already own the game since launch should be free.

This was really fun until I realized the gun literally does not work. I unloaded 8 bullets directly into a monster, & it didn't even bleed. I hit it once with my Axe, & it died. Idk if it was a bug or what, but none of the enemies seem to be affected by the gun at all whatsoever. Otherwise, this game seems really fun if I could stop dying repeatedly because my gun doesn't work lol.

Beat my first playthrough right around 27 hours. I know I missed some secrets hidden in nooks and crannies, and probably a few hidden in plain sight. The open world is not cramped, but not so expansive that you feel exhausted exploring it. A lot of secret passages and unmarked locales to find cool stuff in. Limited fast travel helps cut down on cross-mapping while keeping you in harms way (as it should be) 9/10. The main story is a 10/10. Side quests 8/10 and still very fun. Gameplay is solid with minimal jank 8/10. Atmosphere is exactly what I was expecting from trailers, supernatural horror cowboy action 10/10. Stealth is interesting and useful, it's not the sort of game to go guns blazing into every encounter, but the system is more like stealth lite; it will take some time getting used to melee ranges, and figuring out how close you can be to a non-target to not aggro them with a gunshot 8/10. Enemy diversity is okay, but still solid. New species are encountered at a relatively satisfying pace and things get stronger as you progress chapters 8/10. Enemy design is perfect for the setting 10/10. Gunplay is phenomenal, and deserves its own review. If you like period weaponry you'll love every firearm in the game. Wheel guns, single action fanning, lever guns, double barrels, all we're missing is a few gatling guns. Reloads are slow and ammo is not plentiful, but not scarce in the base difficulty 10/10. Weaponry overall is solid. There is not much diversity in types of weapons considering the setting, and that tracks. You get bows and crossbows on top of a host of melee weapons to use in place of bullets. It's not an archery game, but they still manage to make the bows satisfying. Where it gets really good is in the unique/legendary department. Very cool modifiers on uniques, and each weapon has a well thought out "lore" description that you'll appreciate if you're a lore nerd like me 10/10. Artifacts/talisman system is solid as well. Many unique artifacts to find and even more common ones leading to a good build diversity that you can switch up on the fly as you like 10/10. Combine this with a decently planned perk/leveling system and you have a fair amount of freedom to kit out as you please. 9/10 Soundtrack is 100/10. NG+ and Challenge modes here I come!

Blood West is a fun sneaky-shooter with some immersive sim elements and a memorable, unique art style. It's easy to recommend Blood West, but with the caveat that the game runs longer than the game mechanics and level design can really support. For me, the enjoyment peaked in Chapter 2, and then really ran out of steam in Chapter 3. Halfway through Chapter 3, I found myself crawling through the most generic nondescript caves with the same repeating floor and wall textures, and wondering what part of it was supposed to be holding my interest. The game should have wrapped at the end of Chapter 2 and been a tight ~10 hour experience. If you're like me and you find Chapter 3 saps your interest in continuing, you will still have gotten your money's worth out of the previous two chapters. So, it's a recommendation (especially at sale prices), but not an unmitigated one.
