very fun. best part is when you see all the nukes rain down. "fun" gameplay + games can last up to 6 hours. probably could run on any pc too.
the only winning move is not to play.

A true classic. I feel like I was able to end covid globally all by my lonesome, by showering swaths of the planet with nuclear fire. :D

DEFCON, the world's first (And likely only) genocide 'em up. You assume control of a country / group of nations and must commandeer their nuclear arsenal, and deliver it in the most effective way possible, either via air launch, ground based launches, or nautical launches via submarines. Choose whether to go on the attack fully or embrace a small, near non-existant possibility to deter a few impacts. The game has no real set up time, and you are given everything to set up instantly, no need to farm resources or prepare. You just decide where to place your structures, and wait. Upon reaching the higher DEFCON levels, you can technically launch your weapons if you desire, or wait. Ground based silos can be switched from attack to intercept, to as the name implies, intercept incoming missiles. Once a nuclear weapon is let loose though, everyone tends to launch theirs. The winning move is to not play. Have fun.

DEFCON is less a game, and more an effective demonstration of the grim implications of nuclear proliferation.
Biggest positives:
+++ Conveys a strong anti-nuclear message without a single word of plot
++ Haunting soundtrack that hints at the perverse nature of the game
Other notes:
~ Glacial pace of play
- Too tedious to try and execute more powerful strategies after learning the basics

A fine addition to genocide-likes. Defcon is not particularly fun to play, but it's immersive. Plenty of dread and anxiousness. You make many of your decisions in the beginning phases of the game, and watching them unfold is an absolute terror. Millions will die because you placed your missile defenses incorrectly. What could be better?

So far I've only played the tutorial, but I'm digging it so far! It is just the right amount of complexity, and I'm surprised I've never seen a nuclear strategy game before.
