I'm genuinely surprised by how good this game is! I was craving some military shooter, got this one on sale and had such a blast! The gunfeel aged a bit but is still quite good. It's pretty realistic so aiming can be difficult: you got to think of the practicality of breaking cover and the feasibility of each shot. The level design is amazing. Having to command your squad(s) to suppress enemy fire pushes you to analyze the battleground and evaluate your best options to carefully navigate the terrain. Those tactical components aged like fine wine. Plus, the story is moving and complemented by good voice acting (at least in French). It's always cheap, often on sale: I warmly recommend it!

The story was fine, but the gameplay can take a while to get used to. Even while using ADS, it is difficult to hit your target sometimes even at close range. This game requires you to effectively use your team in order to take down enemies. For me spamming down and wasting hundreds of bullets just to suppress the enemy slows down the pace of the game for me. Also, since this is an older game, I experienced some screen/resolution issues but there are some workarounds. Overall, I finished the campaign experience under 4 hours. It's a decent tactical FPS entry, but personally it did not fit my play style.

A classic WWII tactical shooter. I've been playing this since it came out on the original Xbox and it still hasn't lost its charm.

I finally decided to dive into the Brothers in Arms trilogy - back when Ubisoft still dared to experiment and tried to compete with heavyweights like Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and Battlefield. As a kid, I played the second installment, Earned in Blood, on the PS2. But somehow, I completely missed both the first and third entries. So going back to the roots felt like discovering something new. Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 is a first-person tactical shooter based on real events of World War II. You play as Sergeant Matt Baker of the 101st Airborne Division, dropped behind enemy lines during the D-Day invasion of Normandy. What makes this game stand out is its tone and storytelling. It doesn’t go full Hollywood blockbuster like Call of Duty - it’s more grounded, raw, and human. Between missions, Baker reflects on his experiences, adding emotional weight and atmosphere. You can tell the developers aimed high, even if their tools and experience were still evolving. At the time, Gearbox Software wasn’t yet the studio we know today. Road to Hill 30 was their first major original project - up until then, they mostly worked on Half-Life expansions and ports. Later, they’d hit it big with Borderlands, but this game was their first bold move into creating something of their own. Gameplay-wise, this isn’t a run-and-gun shooter. If you’re used to storming enemy positions solo like in CoD - good luck. Even a handful of enemies behind cover will force you to stop and rethink your strategy. Combat revolves around positioning, suppression fire, and flanking. Your squad isn’t just for show - they’re crucial to survival. You’ll issue orders, lay down suppressive fire, and maneuver around enemy positions using teamwork. Weapons behave differently: the sniper rifle is precise, but most rifles and SMGs have realistic recoil and sway. Enemies react intelligently, shifting positions and trying to stay out of your line of fire. Compared to more complex tactical shooters, the mechanics here might feel basic. But they’re solid and satisfying, especially when combined with the strong narrative and pacing. In some missions, enemies respawn until you complete an objective (like planting charges), but in most cases, you’re clearing out finite enemy squads. Sure, it shows its age - it’s a 2005 title after all. Technically and visually, it's a product of its time. But its storytelling, balanced gameplay, and tone still hold up. Verdict: A solid 8 out of 10. A compelling, grounded take on WWII that deserves more recognition.

For a game which was released in 2005 It looks so nice I just wanted to go to Normandy to experience it myself but I'm sure Normandy these days doesn't look like this anymore or even It's different from It's game counterpart. But enough talking about the setting that the game takes in. The gameplay is really something to get used to. While even using ADS It's difficult to hit your targets from far and sometimes even in close range. Same goes with your Squads, If the enemy is behind the cover then They won't really hit a thing and so They are good distraction for enemies, so you can sneak to them and take them down each but once you know what to do then It's piece of cake. There are many guides how to improve the quality of this game but I don't trust Steam Guides. I use PCGamingWiki instead. You will definitely need VSync On and Monitor set to 60Hz cause you don't want the NPCs to be stuck on curb when you finished the mission. Story wise It's classic WW2 D-Day Paratrooper Story. Bros hanging in trees and flanking the enemy forces behind, so your units can advance to the rest of Nazi Germany occupied France once you do these things you don't stop there. We all know how WW2 went. It was pretty decent story. In all honesty I think you should try this game out If you wanna experience something similar to Vietcong, you like WW2 or want to experience something from past with original game mechanics. I enjoy this game. Some may not but like I said It's piece of pastry once you know.

There’s not much I can add that hasn’t already been said in other reviews. Yes, it’s dated – the gunplay, animations, grenades, etc. But if you have any interest in WWII squad-based tactics (and maybe enjoyed the Band of Brothers TV series), this game is absolutely for you. You can feel it was made by a team that pushed the limits of the technology of their time, crafting clever and engaging mechanics to capture the essence of the subject. I’m far from finishing the game, but the storytelling and characters have already drawn me in. This game delivers an experience and level of immersion that most modern, polished multiplayer “tactical” WWII shooters can’t match – and I have plenty of hours in those games. Give it a try and enjoy the ride.
