I love how much the formula has evolved - as someone who can't stop playing roguelites, super happy with the direction Beat Hazard went here. Looks great, runs great, feels great to play. Also love being able to use my large library of music.
Beat Hazard 3 uses AI in-game and in its promotional material.
I saw it in the promotional material and dumbly looked past it because I had heard good things about Beat Hazard. A blatant mistake on my part. AI image generation is soulless, corporate garbage that uses illegally obtained datasets to produce awful art. It steals from indie artists (aka people like our developer here), and it is incredibly harmful to our environment. How do you feel about people who pirate your games, Steve from Cold Beam Games? Do you feel like people are stealing something you put effort and passion into? I bet it doesn't feel good, and it especially doesn't feel good for your wallet. So why are you okay with doing it to others? I know why; at some point, you got lazy and cheap. You decided that instead of buying a 3D model from an asset store and throwing it into Blender or, god forbid, commissioning a small indie artist, you'd use AI. You figured it probably wouldn't affect your income. Well, here I am; the consequences of your decisions. I bought the entire trilogy, and now I'm refunding the entire trilogy. Maybe I would've fallen in love with BH3 or BH2. Maybe I would've followed your socials, looked forward to any other games you may produce. Instead, you've lost a customer.

A shoot em up where the levels you play and ships you unlock are linked to the songs you listen to - either from your mp3 library or over spotify. There's also a multiplayer aspect where you can compete for high scores in a shared galaxy. It has more depth than the previous two games and is still pretty fun, though I had issues with the spotify integration and would have to routinely alt tab out of the game to fiddle with it.

If you like bullet hell shooters and music, this game is great. It's basically the classic astroids with upgraded graphics, twin stick gameplay, cool boss enemy ships, and upgradable ships. There are some light RPG elements as you finish each stage (length of the songs you select), you get these points where you can spend on various upgrades. The game's default music is electro/techno, but you can play whatever music you want and the tempo of the music will affect the game somewhat. If you want to shoot faster, you probably want to play songs with faster beats but then the enemies will also move faster. There is also a galaxy mode where you get to take control of different planets, which are represented by songs. This is actually pretty cool once you figure out what is going on. I have spent some time in this mode. I have played the two earlier Beat Hazards so by now I am pretty used to the flashing screen which is quite distracting, but I still tune the effects down. A big part of the game is to figure out where your ship is at all times :) I see this game as a new, more interactive way to listen to music.
