First off, I honestly didn't know what to expect when going into this game. I bought it back in 2023 if I recall correctly, and it sat in my library, untouched, for month after month until I finished some of my other projects and finally got around to it. And yes, I'll get straight to the point: there are definitely similarities to UNDERTALE. The thought never really crossed my mind as I haven't really thought much about UNTERTALE at all since 2018 or so, but I definitely noticed the inspiration an hour or so into the game. I'll also say this: these influences, despite being obvious, do not detract from the game. It has its own traits and characteristics that give it a unique identity, and I feel that it's a fantastic game regardless. (I should also note that I haven't read any other reviews and that this is all guesswork. I can't even remember how much I paid for the game, let alone most of the details on its store page.) If you're still reading this, you probably want to know more about the game itself and its qualities or issues. Great. That's literally exactly why I'm writing this review. (I also have nothing else going on in my life, and I like situations where I can yell into the void and assume someone else will listen.) The gameplay is absolutely fantastic. It's split up into two main sections: the overworld, and the individual fights. The overworld is a sort of hub area that you get to explore, find things in, and avoid traps throughout, and the fights are... you know... bosses. The movement is snake-like, as you've probably already noticed, meaning that you have to switch between the snake mode and observation mode, which gives you more fine control over your movements and lets you attack. Managing between the two modes and knowing when to use each is a large part of the game, and many of the mechanics in these fights revolve around the strengths and weaknesses of each. It's also worth mentioning that this game has perks you can equip similar to those in Hollow Knight, if you've ever played that. Some of these are granted for beating fights or progressing, and others are unlocked through exploring in the overworld. These add a surprising amount of depth and it's a lot more fun to tailor these to your preference and create your own combos than I thought it would be. Additionally, you can choose from various special moves that use up your energy, another resource you'll be managing in battle. The boss fights are definitely the core focus of the game, and they're very fun. I should also mention that this game has four separate difficulties, one of which is easier than the standard. As someone inexperienced with the genre, I played on normal and found it to be a good difficulty, as I restarted 2 to 5 times per fight on average during the later half of the game. I'm not going to go into excruciating detail about the boss fights since I know this review is definitely going to stretch on longer than a... snake. In the arcade game snake. However, there are some parts of the game that feel a little bit like filler. I can imagine some people loving the gameplay but not liking the story moments in the meantime, kind of like how a lot of people felt about Neon White. (If you know, you know. ((I actually unironically enjoyed Neon White's plot, so keep that in mind.)) Some bosses are reused multiple times as well, but they still have differences that separate them in their repeat encounters. A second large component of this game is the story. It's very explicitly meta, and a lot of the plot revolves around the player being, quite literally, just a player, interacting with the game through a keyboard or controller (or touchscreen if you're tech savvy ((and a psychopath)). There are definitely a lot of cliche moments, but I actually found myself getting invested into the game's world over the course of playing through it. A lot of the dialogue can be accessed through the pause menu through the contacts button, which also means that you can skip over this if you don't like, (although I'd still recommend reading it all since it contributes to the game's identity and the dialogue is pretty well written.) Of course, you can also find documents and notes (because every game has them, except you won't find them under logs here) left around the hub worlds that give you more information on the game's setting. These are actually pretty fun to read and don't stretch on too long. Think 5 or so percent the size of this review, tops. Also worth mentioning is that the translation is also very good. I noticed exactly one spelling mistake in the entire game, and I'm pretty sure it was just something being past-tense when it should have been present-tense. The character designs are quite neat, but they also fall victim to the anime trope of 80% of the characters falling into the three categories of twelve-year-old girls, badass swordsmen, or giant robots. (See Fei, Samurai, and Origin.) Fei (the white-haired girl on the cover) is the game's main (or at least tied for main) character, and - despite her seeming one-dimensionness - the game does a good job of making her a likeable companion through the game. I wouldn't normally consider a character not being terrible worthy of praise, but given how many games have unbearable sidekicks, I appreciate the effort they put into making her not really irritating or annoying, like so many others have failed to do in the past. For the body section of this review, I'd like to talk about the sound. Yes, it's very good. The sound effects are great. Things like dodging, attacking enemies, grabbing points, losing points, and using abilities all sound great. The music is also absolutely fantastic. There were a lot of times where a fight would start and I'd think, "Oh wow. Yeah. This is 'the song.' When people think about Last Command they're going to think of this song." And then there were six or so songs like that. However, some of the themes are rather repetitive. The overworld tracks, while seeming around four or so minutes long, repeat a lot, and this can get grating. They're still nice songs, but not all songs are ones that you can listen to for hours on end tirelessly. Lastly, I'll note that there are some sections that definitely feel like they could have used another song. While the tracks are very good, you will hear some of them A LOT, especially with the occasional repeat boss. So yes, I didn't know what to expect going in. Soon enough, I drew parallels to other games and my expectations were revolving around those. But I liked this game A LOT. Much more than I was expecting to. Yes, maybe it's because I could relate to some of the themes present, (mostly in the ending ((I ONLY CRIED A LITTLE)) maybe it's because I'm one of those anomalies that enjoys reading in-game documents explaining the game's world, or maybe it's because it's legitimately extremely fun and well designed in all the areas it needs to be. (It does commit the game design cardinal sin of having you skip through dialogue every time you restart. There's an option to speed up the dialogue, but it still takes a few seconds and it absolutely adds up if you restart a lot. Why??? If they knew it was enough of an issue to add in a fast-forward, couldn't they have made it skippable in its entirety?) Regardless, it's fun. While the plot isn't the most original in the world, it's still fun and complements the fantastic gameplay. It has its own identity and manages to feel very different from UNDERTALE (save for around the end of the game, which gets egregiously similar). TL;DR IN COMMENT AS IT'S TOO LONG FOR THE REVIEW BOX
The best gameplay I have ever seen in years!!![Eng and Pt-Br review]
You know, I have to say that the cover and description of this game didn't really interest me, and that I picked it up because of a bundle, since I was only mildly interested in it. But I made a big mistake, because Last Command is one of the best games I've played in years! It's a bit complicated to explain this game's gameplay, but it's something like a snake game + bullet hell + action RPG mechanics. It may sound strange, but it's simply the best gameplay I've seen in years, maybe decades! You control a little snake in the digital remains of a post-apocalyptic world, but I'll warn you that the plot of this game is very weak. Honestly, it didn't interest me at all, except for the final boss, which has one of the most exciting fights of all time with a super-heavy lore dump (which doesn't depend at all on understanding the game's lore, which is a huge plus). You must explore a world inhabited by programs, while discovering your objective in existence and being challenged by several other programs dueling with you. That's all you need to know. As for the gameplay, it's perfect! You have an invulnerable dash and a slow/precision mode, and you must collect data packets (the snake's food) to increase your size and attack, all while dodging boss attacks. Increasing your size increases your attack, but you become more vulnerable because you become longer. Using focus mode negates your length, but you become slower, and you still need to use focus mode to attack, which takes time, and taking damage during the attack negates your full attack. Everything just works, simple and mechanically brilliant. Simply defeating the bosses in this game on expert mode or higher is one of the most rewarding things you can experience; it's pure dopamine! I recommend this game to all shmup lovers, retro game fans, and even action game fans; the experience it provides is unparalleled! Each boss introduces new mechanics, and the game never gets boring. The only downside to this game is that playing on easy or normal is terrible, as the bosses lose about half of their attack patterns, literally locking you out of half the game's content. I would have preferred them to increase your HP and give you infinite continues, but I understand, as this makes defeating each boss a very rewarding feat! The game has metroidvania elements, but it's all fake. The game is 100% linear and just have a small map with the skills here and there and even warns you if you've forgotten something before continuing, which is great for me. The focus is on the battles, and the maps are a way to immerse yourself in the lore (even if the plot is weak). The final boss of this game is extremely good! It requires some off-game tasks, which can be a bit annoying, but it's worth it because the ending is difficult and the lore is really good! I would really like to see a sequel, or a new game of this type, even if it is just focused on the fights, because this game is simply the best gameplay I have seen in years!

Although the world may be a bit lacking sometimes, this game has amazing fights and provides an excellent twist upon the bullet-hell formula.
