The game is much like the Commando's 2, but just a bit too much, as the multiplayer is utter unplayable with sync issues, abilities not working on the client, disconnects etc.

Commandos is a nostalgia for me as a 90s kid. This game is the pioneer of strategy games.

I was skeptical at first — high price, buggy launch — but by August, major issues were fixed. I caved, because stealth games are my weakness and Behind Enemy Lines is still one of my all-time favourites. From the first mission, nostalgia hit hard. The maps are gorgeous, the environments pull you in, and pulling off multi-commando takedowns is pure satisfaction. I’m taking it slow, savouring every mission. It’s not perfect — a few bugs remain — but nothing game-breaking. If you loved the originals, you’ll want this. If the price stings, wait for a sale. For me, it’s mission accomplished: that same old Commandos magic is back.

I don't usually write reviews but this is my favorite franchise so i want to leave some feedback. Obviously i recommend playing this game if you have played the older ones. I like that this one combines maps and scenes from the first games but also tries to add the gameplay element from Commandos 2 and newer gen strategy games. I think that while it is based on older games and lore, it still has character of its own. It takes itself a bit more seriously than the other games in the franchise (i.e. the exaggerated character accents are gone, which i liked, the character animations etc). The "balance" changes that have been made are awesome! All the commandos are relevant and have a place in every mission. In the older games you could pretty much finish the mission with half the characters most of the time. I would love for the next installments to include tools/items/consumables etc, like in Commandos 2. An inventory for every commando, in short, a much more detailed/deep gameplay. I'm playing the game on Veteran on my first attempt and while you do need to stop and think about how you are going to approach and act on a situation, i think it's still kind of easy.... You have so few tools and strategies at your disposal, that you can easily come up with a strategy to be stealthy and effective if you think for a bit. Final Score: 9/10!!!! Thank you guys for bringing this fantastic game back!!!

It had several bugs when it was released. In my eyes, it was rather a beta; no way it wast justified it cost ~£40. As of today, it still has bugs, one of the several I still see is: throwing a stone with the marine and the game gets stuck on that action, and you cannot move. You need to switch to the knife or something to get it "unlocked".

Like good old times! It is quite buggy but it is not the game-breaking kind of bugs.

I love these squad based stealth strategy games, but you should definitely start with all the mimimi games first (shadow tactics, desperados 3, shadow gambit), then sumerian six before looking at this one. If you are also fiending for more in the genre I overall had a good time with origins. 30 hours or so to beat on hardest difficulty. Pretty good amount of levels and most of them are huge (often over 150-200 enemies on the map) leading to a lot of creativity in approach and fun in timing the combination of abilities. Main downside is that as of August 2025 the game is still pretty buggy - camera drove me crazy in some multi-level areas, janky/awkward movement and execution of orders sometimes, weird FPS drops even on beefy hardware, etc. The overall story and dialogue is also a weak point but not really what I am here for. Still overall had a good time and would recommend.

I seemed to review Origins already so this will be just a tiny addition. I loved commandos 2, in Origins I finished the very 1st mission, spent 10 minutes on 2nd and then just quitted. Almost no vibes from the previous commandos 2, it's just different and I can't find myself continue playing it.. Several months ago I played a couple of comm2 missions with my kid and felt myself kinda getting back to those times. Something that must have happen to me playing Origins but not. Here and there I found myself comparing it with comm2 being mostly complaining on Origins.. awhile ago I finished Weird West https://store.steampowered.com/app/1097350/Weird_West_Definitive_Edition/ . From the very beginning it catches you with tiny details as it was with comm2 and being able to loot, search for various stuff in boxes/cupboards etc., stealing things and having a variety of ways of getting down your enemies it releases you in the very end.. So far my 2nd game that I felt in love too.

Unfortunately the game is just a parody to the Commandos 2. It has less game mechanics than the game of 2001, It is very repetitive and becomes boring after 3 or 4 missions. Decorations of every mission are different but they are all the same, just clear the map and move to the next one. No story, no relationships between missions. I guess it is still fine to buy during the sale period.
Better than expected!
I finished the game on hardest difficulty after 48 hours. The game is certainly worth the price for the length however it does not come without issues. I am a long time Commandos fan, my all time favourite is always Commandos 2 along with Behind Enemy lines and I cannot express enough how much I hate Beyond The Call of Duty. Strike Force was a great game if it did not have the title Commandos but as a Commandos game well, let's all forget it ever existed. I loved Commandos 2 so much that I spent learning a bit of Spanish to be able to create Mod for it to implement Behind Enemy Lines gameplay to it and I did (mod is on moddb). A few years ago, Mimimi studio made Shadow Tactics and it was great. However, Desperados 3 was ultimate disaster and extremely linear. This brought a big fear into me when Origins was announced because I was so worried they follow the Mimimi trends and make ultra boring linear games that you have only one maximum 2 ways of finishing levels. Every single level in those games was a puzzle where you had to figure out the order of the guards you needed to take out without them seeing each other with almost zero creative approach. Stealth was forced and it left no replayability behind for me.
Back to Commandos Origins:
The game starts with 3 ULTRA boring and badly designed levels. If you managed to beat the first 3 levels without uninstalling and refunding the game then you start to face the good side. Operation Nightfall to me is possibly the worst mission ever designed in human history. Good thing is right after you beat that level the game starts to get the good old commandos feeling.
The Good:
- Freedom of approach just like the old games, you can go gun blazing or full stealth. - Very diverse missions (after mission 3), you can even steal a Panzer III tank and blow an airfield with it just like BEL. - Commandos have interesting new abilities like the Spy's new silenced pistol. - Very lengthy game play (took 48 hours for me to finish it on hardest difficulty).
The Bad:
- Terrible voice acting and voice choices for characters - Subpar animation for enemies specially when they engage into combat. - Bugs, the game has some really annoying bugs but not big enough to stop you from playing it. - Commandos are not assigned to their classic number and order in the selection menu. - Useless intro driving scenes in some missions where you cannot skip them. - Marine has lost his pistol for no reason.
The Ugly:
- The first 3 missions and the final mission are badly designed and they are extremely frustrating. - Alarm system is terrible, in this game when you trigger an alarm the game gets much easier. Instead of patrols or reinforcements coming from guard houses like in the classic games, in Commandos Origins you have 3 stages of Alarm, 3 area alarms and 1 global alarm. The Global alarm makes the game extremely easy to beat because all enemies will abandon their posts and start looking around, this easily can result in baiting them to traps or just basically go to the area they were covering before. Every time you are in a situation where you are stuck with guards watching each other just raise a global alarm by doing something and they abandon their posts. - Enemies in combat can move with the speed of wind and shoot while moving with sliding animation. - Enemies do not have any hit reaction to getting hit by pistol bullets which means even in combat they can still shoot you back if you hit them. - Spy is probably one of the most useless characters in ending missions as for some reason in this game he has no access to higher rank uniforms. He can only disguise as soldier or guards. Soldier disguise is not effective against Snipers and Guards and Officers, Guards disguise is not effective against officers. Unfortunately there is no officer disguise which is very questioning. - Some commandos are able to carry the bodies while crouching which is an easy glitch to be inside enemy vision and kill and carry right after you kill without being spotted. - The missions objective triggers are not properly set up, for example in one mission Green Beret is captured and will be executed if alarm raises. If you rescue him and raise the alarm you still fail with a message saying he got executed while he is already rescued and is playable in your team. Another example is final mission, if you kill the officer even when all of his guards are alive and shooting at you the game ends with mission success story and you can even see during the cutscene your guy is being shot at by 1000 soldiers but well mission ends. - If you finish the main objectives all of the secondary objectives that you have not completed get removed which basically forces you to finish the level even if you were aiming to explore for 100% progress. - And last but not least, who thought it is a good idea to make Sapper the main guy instead of Green Beret? He was always the commander in old games but here he is just a pun...
Final Verdict:
The game is good and it is worth the price. But lower your expectations to Behind Enemy Lines level made for today's standards. This game by no means is any successor to C2 and if you ignore that fact it is a very enjoyable game.
