This game really exceeded my expectations, I've only been playing for around an hour but it's easily one of my favorite games. The only real complaint I could have is it needs more depth to it, but even then it's just a fighting game and can be amazing with just fighting, to me at least. Absolutely recommended to anyone who likes fighting games, even if lacking substance.

Melty Blood: Type Lumina is a compelling revival of the classic fighting game series that manages to balance its nostalgic roots with modern gameplay mechanics and impressive presentation. Developed by French-Bread and published by Arc System Works, the game offers a polished and dynamic 2D fighting experience that appeals both to longtime fans of the Melty Blood franchise and newcomers to the genre. The game features a diverse roster of characters, each with their own unique move sets, playstyles, and storylines, creating a vibrant and engaging universe that invites players to explore different combat philosophies. The game’s visual style is striking, with fluid animations, detailed character sprites, and a vibrant color palette that makes every match feel lively and intense. Its soundtrack complements the fast-paced action perfectly, blending energetic tracks with a sense of urgency that keeps players engaged from start to finish. One of the standout elements of Melty Blood: Type Lumina is its accessibility combined with deep gameplay mechanics. While it introduces modern controls and streamlined mechanics designed to lower the barrier of entry for new players, it also retains the complexity and depth that fighting game enthusiasts crave. The game offers multiple control schemes, from beginner-friendly options to more advanced setups, allowing players to gradually learn the intricacies of each character and their combos. The training mode is comprehensive, providing detailed tutorials, frame data, and practice opportunities that help players refine their skills and understand the nuances of timing, spacing, and execution. The roster is another highlight, featuring a mix of iconic characters from the visual novel and fighting game series, as well as some fresh faces. Each character’s design is meticulously crafted, with smooth animations that showcase their personality and fighting style. The game’s character balance feels well-tuned, with each fighter offering unique advantages and challenges, maintaining a healthy competitive environment. The story mode, though not the primary focus, provides engaging narratives that deepen the lore and give context to the battles. It’s complemented by various other game modes, including online ranked matches, player matches, and local multiplayer, all of which are designed to deliver a seamless and responsive experience. The online infrastructure is robust, with relatively low latency and matchmaking that supports both casual play and competitive tournaments. Visually, Melty Blood: Type Lumina is a feast for the eyes. The character sprites are highly detailed, with expressive animations and effects that enhance each attack and special move. The backgrounds are beautifully crafted, offering a variety of locales that reflect the game’s supernatural and gothic themes, from eerie forests to mystical arenas. The visual effects during combat are vibrant and dynamic, with flashy combos, particle effects, and screen shake that amplify the excitement of each fight. The user interface is clean and intuitive, providing players with clear information about their health, special meters, and move lists without cluttering the screen. The game’s audiovisual presentation successfully captures the frantic energy and aesthetic charm of classic 2D fighters while elevating it with modern polish. Overall, Melty Blood: Type Lumina is a standout entry in the fighting game genre that successfully bridges the gap between nostalgic charm and contemporary design. It offers a balanced combination of accessibility and depth, making it suitable for newcomers and seasoned fighters alike. Its diverse roster, engaging gameplay mechanics, and beautiful visual presentation create an experience that is both fun and challenging. The online features and multiple game modes ensure longevity and replayability, fostering a vibrant community.
