Its just risk of rain 1 but better. So surprisingly I'd play the second game if you havn't already. And if you love risk of rain 2 then I'd highly recommend getting returns as well its simular but of course also very different as its 2D. Big fan of Pilot.

This game changed my life for the better. This is a phenomenal send off from hopoo games to the beloved risk of rain franchise. The animations are fluid, and the synergies are at their peak in this video game. The sound is a banger, with tracks that are engaging and often bring you to tears with their melodies. smash like.

I have this game and Risk Of Rain 2 in my library, and i will tell you its difficult (even harder than its sequel???), sometimes unfair, and can cause you to rage-quit, but i will be definitely lying if i start saying that this game is "bad", aside from the EULA stuff gearbox decided to shove in all of their games, i still enjoyed this game, and their new "trials"
(yes, including the judgement trial!)
i cant recommend this game enough if you are a risk of rain fan. but it might make you rip out your hair from the unfair swarms of enemies.

Risk of Rain Returns is a thrilling action-platformer that builds upon the foundation of the beloved Risk of Rain series, delivering a fresh yet familiar experience for fans and newcomers alike. The game expertly combines fast-paced combat, procedurally generated levels, and roguelike mechanics to create a high-stakes adventure where every run feels unpredictable and exciting. What immediately stands out is the game’s polished presentation, which maintains the pixel-art charm of the original while enhancing visual effects, animations, and environmental details to create a vibrant and dynamic world. This careful balance between nostalgia and innovation helps Risk of Rain Returns carve its own identity while honoring its roots. The core gameplay revolves around exploring diverse biomes, battling increasingly difficult waves of enemies, and collecting powerful items that modify your character’s abilities in meaningful ways. Each run challenges players to adapt on the fly, making strategic decisions about which items to prioritize and when to push forward or retreat. The game features a roster of unique survivors, each with distinct playstyles and skill sets, allowing for varied approaches to combat and exploration. The enemies and bosses are cleverly designed, often requiring players to master dodging, timing, and positioning to survive the relentless onslaught. The difficulty scaling keeps tension high, ensuring that no two playthroughs feel the same and rewarding skillful play. One of the highlights of Risk of Rain Returns is its extensive item synergy system, which encourages experimentation and creative builds. As you gather equipment and artifacts, combinations emerge that can drastically alter your gameplay, leading to satisfying moments of power and discovery. This system adds significant replay value, motivating players to revisit the game with different characters and strategies. Multiplayer also plays a big role, with cooperative runs allowing friends to team up and coordinate their abilities to overcome tougher challenges. The online matchmaking is smooth, and the community aspect adds an enjoyable social dimension to the otherwise intense solo experience. While the game excels in many areas, it does present some challenges. The learning curve can be steep, especially for players unfamiliar with roguelikes or the previous Risk of Rain titles. Early deaths are common as you adjust to the game’s pace and mechanics, which might frustrate some but also encourages mastery through repeated attempts. Additionally, the procedural generation, while generally well-executed, occasionally produces less memorable level layouts or repetitive enemy encounters. There are also moments where the on-screen chaos can feel overwhelming, making it harder to track threats amid the fast action. However, these issues are largely overshadowed by the game’s rewarding gameplay loop and sense of progression. In summary, Risk of Rain Returns is a compelling roguelike action game that successfully expands on the series’ core formula with improved visuals, refined mechanics, and deep item interactions. It offers an intense, skill-based challenge that appeals to players who enjoy fast-paced combat and strategic decision-making under pressure. With its blend of solo and cooperative modes, endless replayability, and a rich variety of characters and items, the game stands out as a must-play for fans of the genre. Risk of Rain Returns invites you to dive in, embrace the chaos, and experience the thrill of surviving against ever-growing odds. Rating: 8/10

Great game, terrible EULA. Don't install this (or any other Gearbox/2K game) unless you want your bank information stolen and sold. Pretty crazy how many Gearbox employees and paid reviewers are coming out of the woodwork to gaslight everyone into thinking this isn't a big deal.

This is a remake of Risk of Rain, one of my favorite games on Steam made by two student developers that went on to work at Valve. While it offers fantastic gameplay, updated graphics and near infinite builds & possibilities .. it's been gobbled up by another corporate blob requiring you to sign a separate EULA endlessly signing away your rights as a consumer. It's unfortunate but I no longer recommend purchasing this game as a result.

great game but terrible, terrible decision to take away consumer rights. This game easily could have been a simple "you download, you play, enjoy :)" with no online connectivity besides peer-to-peer. If someone cheats or mods or hacks or whatever, don't play co-op with them. You pay for this game twice, once with your money and once with your privacy. And in the end you don't even own it when the developers reserve the right to take it away. HOPOO GAMES, FIND A NEW PUBLISHER.
