The original Risk of Rain was my favorite rouge-ish. I didn't care for Risk of Rain 2. This is a good return to form, the original but better. More detailed pixel art, more items, more maps, more characters, and a more stable game. This is what I wanted instead of RoR2.

the rain returns
a really really good remake of the 1st game, of course graphically it looks a bit better and is easier to tell whats happening but the real kicker on why this just replaces the original game is. new enemies, characters, items, easy as risk of rain 2 too mod. if you like risk of rain 2 or if you liked the 1st game you will most likely get some good mileage out of this one

It's quite challenging, but because of this they've added an option to adjust dealt damage and damage reduction--something that me playing games casually really appreciates!! Discovering secrets, items, and new survivors, this game is amazing, and that's not even diving into the gorgeous pixelart and soundtrack.
Highly recommend giving it a go, it's also really fun with friends!

Incredible game. The gameplay loop strongly resembles Risk of Rain, but has been improved and refined in every way. On top of that, the art and sound has been improved too. Hopoo Games learned from their work on risk of rain 2 and came back to perfect what Risk of Rain was supposed to be.

a truly classic 2d pixel art game updated with higher fidelity sprites, game mechanics and characters from its 3d counterpart, and an authentic reinterpretation of the original game. 10/10, bought even though I already have 100 hours in risk of rain (original flavor)
