This game is thoroughly disappointing, it has enjoyable gameplay that last for about 2 hours of the 22 hours I have invested into this poorly written game. The best feature they could add was skipping cutscenes.

30.8 hours is how long it took me to 100% the game, to do everything that has an achievement and even the stuff in-game that doesn't. I've never been so engrossed in a game narrative before. For a general idea, imagine this game as Megalobox meets Real Steel, with a dash of Neon White sprinkled in. I never wanted to stop playing. The game offers a cast of goofballs I could never get enough of, with gameplay that while admittedly is rather simple, is still super fun and addictive. Getting this for a measly $5 feels like a scam, I'd easily have paid 20, maybe even 30 if I knew what I was going to get out of this game beforehand. It's a fucking fully-voiced indie game, how often do we get those for games this long? The most I can do is pick up the other game from the dev, and keep a close eye out for any future games, because this was such a treat, and I don't want to spoil too much about what makes it too special. Please play this. This game has less than 1000 reviews at the time of review, and that's such a shame, because a game of this quality shouldn't be ignored.

Wolfstride probably would not appeal to me if it was accurately described. Like generally I don't go for visual novels. Or at least I thought I didn't. Maybe I should try more. Generally I don't think writing in a game is very important to my enjoyment of it. I think I'd rather read a book or listen to a song, watch a movie, if I want something "well written". By that I mean the text conveys interesting ideas in a fashion distinct to the work. And videogames rarely can hit that for me. But maybe I'm not playing enough well written games. I felt the same after Disco Elysium. Wolfstride is not to the level of Disco Elysium, though the writing had moments of greatness. The extended end sequence (which may have knocked a half star off playability, was a little too long, but kinda needed it, don't knw how I would improve it) pulled apart some interesting ideas, and pulled threads from earlier in the work. But then it faltered a bit, defaulted to tropey bits. Which was a shame. But that reliance on tropes is my issue with videogame writing I guess. But some of its meditations on death and existence were actually quite good. The visual presentation is also great. Again, anime / manga influenced art I'm just not too into, only because it is over done. But Wolfstride really works it into its distinct vibe. Like I don't think it is aping or paying tribute to Cowboy Bebop, I think it is in conversation with it. Which relates to the writing, and is when it is good. There is a sequence in the end game that uses video footage, thought that was killer. Like solid pixel art, mechs and manga. Then wham out of nowhere. Like newsreel type stuff. Thumbs up. Lastly the music is very good. Works with the game to fully develop the vibe. Kinda a jazz fusion, pizzicato 5 space age bachelor pad thing. The gameplay was surprisingly engaging. I liked the minigames. The mech combat is totally solid turn based JRPG type thing. It did get a bit easy by the end. But not sure how much harder it could have been without feeling cheap. There is an end sequence combat that is a riff on the rest of the game's combat system, but slightly different. Would have been cool if it had fused BDSM, cat baths, treasure digging and explosion catching. On the whole a solid game

this is basically a suda51 mecha jrpg, it's honestly amazing, you can expect great artwork, compelling characters, and a bunch of really funny shitty jokes, 2x recommend if you are a NMH fan

While this game has really great moments, it drags a lot with very slow portions. The final boss fights are also really annoying, not even using your main abilities you've been building up for the entire game. Also has moments that it is very easy to get stuck and not know how to move the story forward. Not recommended.
