If you love feudal japan, excellent hack and slash combat, and gorgeous looking platformers with roguelike elements, GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is a must buy. You play as Fuuma, a samurai of the Getsu warrior clan on his quest to eradicate the demons of hell before they overrun the surface world. The combat is much more intricate than it appears. With multiple weapons like a katana, chain, gauntlets, spears, clubs, bows, bombs, kunai, and many more, you have more than enough tools to take down hell's demons. There's also a Break system where you can stun an enemy and execute them in stylish fashion while also granting you better loot. Attack enough enemies without taking damage to activate a demon form that gives you more speed and power.
Like other reviews have said the game does start a bit slow. Fuuma doesn't have much HP early on and your initial weapons are on the weak side but it only takes a couple runs before you start to get real powerful real fast. Dying does send you back to home with all your items lost but an upgrade can help you recover some of it. There's a second playable character, Renge the kunoichi. She has less HP than Fuuma but is much faster. With all the different weapon combinations and randomized level layouts, no two runs feel the same even though you have been in these locations before. The boss attacks are very well telegraphed and with proper usage of the dodge roll you can overcome almost any boss even with a "bad" load out.
If I had any negatives about this game it would be the wasted potential. Konami teased two more playable characters and stages but unfortunately the game didn't live up to their expectations and updates ceased. This also shows in the ending which teases something bigger. The game doesn't have much of a story to begin with but even the current ending leaves a lot to be desired. Don't let all this stop you, Undying Moon is a fantastic game and even in it's "unfinished" state there's more than enough to enjoy. Get it!
