TL;DR: The Cosmic Shake is an enjoyable enough platformer, but I wouldn't recommend it over other games in the genre. If you're interested enough, purchase on an at least 67% sale, at least to me it's not worth the $40 full price.
I honestly did not enjoy this game as much as I thought that I would. Back when this was announced I was admittedly a little skeptical considering Purple Lamp's work on the Battle For Bikini Bottom remake. I'm a big fan of the original version of BFBB, it was one of my favorite platformers as a kid and even today I love revisiting it every now and again. Sure its not perfect, it IS still a licensed game at the end of the day, but by licensed game standards the original BFBB is the holy grail.
I played that remake and felt mixed at the end. I still enjoyed it enough to beat it, but so many minor icks kept popping up that really hampered my enjoyment. Physics just not feeling right, some elements just looking off to me, Mr. Krab's spatulas costing WAY TOO MUCH and requiring TONS OF GRINDING. Despite all of my issues with that game, I was admittedly interested in what a unique game done by Purple Lamp would be like.
After some time most reviews that I heard were saying that this was the new best spongebob platformer, blowing BFBB and other games like Creature from the Krusty Krab out of the water. My interest was at a max at this point, maybe Purple Lamp learned from the (minor) mistakes with Rehyrdated and made something awesome. Fast forward to last week, got the game on sale, and... Yeah its, like its okay.
Most of my issues with this game are about the same as Rehyrated, boiling down to many tiny icks that just build and build. When you move the stick, Spongebob has about a quarter second delay where he builds up speed before reaching his max speed and it just feels sluggish. Once you get past that the movement is fine if a bit slow, but why even have the slow start to begin with? The glide move also feels half baked, its so slow with very little horizontal momentum. Instead of sinking like a stone you sink like a flat stone you'd use for rock skipping. Most of my deaths in this game came to putting too much faith in the glide and Spongebobs ledge grab range (I guess that's what you'd call that?).
The unlock-able moves in this game are fine, but the way you unlock them is just boring and lame. 90% of the time its "Oh, the player entered the level where they get this move. They can now do it with no explanation." Literally you just enter a level and some instructions show up at the start saying "Hey you can ground slam now". Meanwhile the karate kick and the reef blower moves have actual introductions, actual dialogue relating to them, every other move just ruined my immersion whenever I got them. They just feel like keys used to open locks for when you want to backtrack later in the game (Again, with the exception of the karate kick which is just OP in combat.)
The humor is sadly just modern spongebob humor. Very few jokes made me chuckle during my playthrough aside from the occasional obscure reference. Most of the jokes are either unfunny modern kids stuff or "HEY REMEMBER THE MY LEG FISH? REMEMBER THE PIZZA? REMEMBER WHEN FISH SCREAM "CHOCOLATE!!" AT SPONGE? FUNNY" Like haha, yes, I remember these. I remember when they were funny. Repeating the joke a bunch isn't funny. Please stop it, we get it.
Prehistoric Kelp Forest just straight up feels unfinished. It feels like a late beta build of the level instead of a completed product. Almost every single cutscene ends or transitions abruptly, shoving you into completely different areas and making you feel dazed every time they happen. The boss has maybe 2 or 3 voice lines she constantly repeats, its one of the shortest levels in the game, it was easily the moment where I realized I wasn't having that much fun and nothing from then on really picked me back up.
Part of me wants to give the benefit of the doubt to the developers, maybe there were certain restraints or demands or deadlines from Nickelodeon that caused the issues this game has, but we've been through this before with Rehyrated. I probably won't be playing whatever Purple Lamp's next project is, but I wish them the best in whatever it is, Spongebob or not. I'd give this game a 6/10. Enjoyed it enough to beat it but I don't see myself going back anytime soon if ever. Perfectly okay tier videogame.
