Drivel. The art style is gorgeous and commendable but everything else is convoluted and pretentious slop. I almost feel bad for chastizing it, but at the same time, it deserves the derision. What an unfun experience.

I enjoyed Fatum Betula (FB) but there's a lot about the game that would turn off most people.
On the basic, the normal walk speed is such a crawl that you'll be spending more time holding down the Shift key for the "run".
In terms of mechanics, it's wider than it is deep. You've been charged with changing the fate of the world you found yourself in. Some are obvious, some more involved. There are aspects that depend on RNG, meaning you can go the entire playthrough never learning it was there. The game assumes you go on the internet to learn about the game, but it quickly empties out an already shallow experience if you do.
There is a story to FB, but it never explains enough to open up possibility and never withholds enough to hold a mystery. Most of the story occurs in the many endings, but they're mainly short poetic verses that seem to point to something, but trail off before becoming something of substance.
The developer does admit that the game is primarily a game of atmosphere, which explains the plain mechanics and weak story. So while I can't recommend this game for people who want a coherent story, I do recommend this for those who want something dripping in atmosphere..
Notes: Played for 3 hours and completed all achievements.

A very interesting game with many different possible endings. It was a lot of fun exploring the different areas of this world and discovering the secrets. The story is rather in the background, which I think is sad, but I liked the overall atmosphere of the game.
A Cryptic Oasis of Reflection & Serenity
Set in a decaying, otherworldly landscape dominated by a skeletal birch tree, the game thrives on its cryptic nature. There are no tutorials or clear answers. just eerie, low poly environments, cryptic symbols, and glowing vials that alter the tree’s fate. This ambiguity is its strength, inviting you to slow down, observe, and reflect. Every discovery feels earned, every revelation open to interpretation. Despite its ominous undertones, the game is surprisingly relaxing. The slow pacing and grainy, PS1-era visuals create a nostalgic warmth, while the ambient soundtrack droning relaxing synths and distant whispers, lulls you into a hypnotic rhythm. Wandering its abandoned streets and clifftop shrines feels meditative, with even simple actions like pouring liquids into altars becoming calming rituals.
Thematically, the game dances with existential weight. Its branching endings tied to the tree’s cyclical life, death, and rebirth invite reflection on futility, purpose, and our relationship with nature. Yet these heavy ideas never feel oppressive. Instead, they’re softened by the game’s abstract presentation, allowing you to project your own meaning onto its mysteries. Is it a parable about environmental collapse? A metaphor for grief? A commentary on the inevitability of time? the game refuses to dictate answers, making each playthrough a deeply personal experience.
Fatum Betula is a cryptic, meditative gem that thrives on ambiguity and atmosphere. Its haunting beauty, slow pacing, and open-ended mysteries create a serene, reflective experience. it’s a quiet, unforgettable journey into the unknown.
