So I played this game a lot in early access. It was wonderful at the beginning. Not long after came an era of horror. When they started updating the game there were not a ton of game crashing bugs. When they switch over from unreal 4 to unreal 5 the bugs hit the fan. There were tons of "bad bugs" (pun intend) beyond belief. There was poor optimization. Multiple times you would crash in a single night, and if you did you got no experience. Another issue was for the new level up system your overall rank wasn't affected but you had to restart all progression in your classes. There were a lot of graphic glitches too. However the game is in a playable state now, maybe not the best.
I believe I saw a review that said that "this game needed to go back in the oven, then that oven needs to go back in the oven," which was such a true statement when it was written. The game is cooked enough to play now. It is fun as it always has been. This game is truly amazing. The in game community doesn't seem to be what it was any more with random people screaming the movie quotes such as "the only good bug is a dead bug," but like I said the game is fun.
So if you like feeling like your in the movie StarshipTroopers being attacked by giant bugs climbing up a wall you have to defend you'll like this game.

I used to feel bad for the devs considering Helldivers 2 (a MUCH better game) came out at a simialr time and utterly overshadowed ST:E in every way possible. Now I see the game costs almost DOUBLE what Helldivers costs, has shitty microtransactions AND still feels like crap to play, my sympathies have dwindled.
DO NOT BUY THIS CRAP. Just get Helldivers 2, its better in absolutley every way.

after they went to UE5 from UE4, the game has been unplayable on anything low-range to mid-range specs.
the community has been complaining about this ever since yet optimizations are still not the sole focus for the devs.
it was fun to play during UE4 times in early access. i could actually play with high to epic settings on this 20 series gpu gaming laptop but now i am below 20 fps on low and nothing i do with any of the upscaling options improve it.
i check in once in a while to see if they have actually improved the performance but they have not.
the developers need to realize that the majority of pc builds consist of low range to mid range specs according to steam hardware surveys and we can assume this pretty much applies to the general pc gaming comunity due to the sheer userbase steam has as the number 1 launcher and video game store.
it's safe to say that the majority is still on low-range to mid-range specs and builds across the different launchers as well.
this is something all devs need to account for whenever they look at switching to UE5 or even making a UE5 game from the start.
do not buy this unless you have a 30 series or 30 series equivalent or higher.
(i say 30 series just to be on the safe side when it comes to performance)

A good effort with good intentions, but execution falls flat. Game still feels like Early Access/months away from full release, but they are selling DLC's. Asking for cosmetics money when your core game DOESN'T RUN because of a lack of optimization doesn't fill players with confidence.
This seems like the sort of game that could change hands, fall into the right studio's laps, and get revived as stripped down more focused experience a few years down the road. But Helldivers2 popped up and has the same vibes, with similar amounts of bugs, but with a 100x better core experience. Realistically, we're stuck waiting another decade plus for the ultimate Starship Troopers game.

Started off strong with a lot of promise, but ended up moving absolutely nowhere, with even worse performance overall than it had on release.
Fun for a minute, but ultimately boring, buggy, and lacking.

Still feels very rough around the edges. Bugs are spawning in unreasonable amounts (Even for a Starship Troopers game). Whilst on some missions there have been occastions where no enemy spawn whatsoever. And every now and then you can't respawn and either wait for the game to end, to get the rewards for the missions and spend X minutes doing nothing, or quit and find a new one. There are plenty of faults with it. And the optimisation, or rather, what optimisation?
The game feels really rushed. I do hope they get their shit together and make the game proper playable. But i have doubts.
The bugs have the upper hand in this one, trooper.

Waited months to play again because after the game released it was unplayable, tried playing again and after the game crashed three times I got labeled a "traitor" for using the flamethrower to clear bug bodies and was kicked from the game. Really disappointed because I've played since day one early access. 3/5 review

Lovely game for friends and family to compentively shit talk other people while not part of your squad as we deal with sudden up tick of tigers and gunners out of nowhere 10/10 would enlist again

A game that started with high hopes at becoming a solid co-op horde shooter has only fallen farther into mediocrity. Optimization issues abound, servers constantly dropping, bullets and grenades being blocked by non-existant terrain, and my most hated the awful sticky movement. Your characters hitbox always feels like its following 5 feet behind you, making it difficult to judge distances from enemies. Special effects tend to be overblown and blind you for most of combat, making the spectacle of killing bugs go from yay to nay. Even the amount and customization of weapons is incredibly lacking, not having underslung shotguns/grenade launchers is criminal. Classes being limited to 2-3 primary weapons is just pathetic. Im not sure what I can say to fix this game, as it is so far behind what it should be I doubt it will ever live to what we wanted.

While this game has some unique and enjoyable elements, I can't honestly recommend it for 50 bucks.
I've been playing since the very first patches of early access and I have spent hundreds of hours on this game, I clearly enjoy it, but I can’t honestly recommend it to others in its current state. This isn't a Helldivers situation where the developers are actively fighting the community, but after seeing the devs fumble for almost 2 years now with no signs of improvement, I think you should be aware of what's going on before spending your money on the game.
Issues
The game was pushed out of early access to justify a price hike despite most of the issues not being fixed.
The game optimization is terrible, playing with the lowest settings possible it runs poorly at best and it turns into a slideshow during big waves, even worse crashes to desktop and bluescreens are not uncommon (I was motivated to write this review by the second bluescreen in 2 days).
The servers are also terrible, most matches are plagued by massive lag spikes, rubberbanding, and desyncing, you'll also get disconnected instantly in half of the games you join after going through matchmaking and loading the level.
The devs are slow to fix things, at this point the spawns have been broken for more than 6 months, some weapons have had fundamental issues that make them nearly unusable for longer than that, and often even gamebreaking bugs don't get fixed before the next major patch hits.
Also the building tutorial is really lacking, in many of your games you'll get a random guy making it his mission in life to build the worst base possible.
Positive aspects
Despite these significant problems, the game has some redeeming qualities that should be acknowledged.
There is nothing quite like this game, it really nails the feeling of an overwhelming horde of bugs crashing down on you, while being balanced by the fact that most (not all) classes have some quirks that makes them feel broken in a fun way.
When hundreds of truck-sized bugs charge at your base, your Morita rifle alone won’t be enough to keep you safe, everyone in the team has to properly engage with the various systems in the game to hope to last long enough to clear the objective. The insane pressure really makes you feel the adrenaline as you unload everything you have on a pile of bugs that is getting dangerously close to the edge of your walls.
The devs also clearly care about and put effort into staying loyal to the source material.
Conclusion
So maybe if you're the kind of person who really loves to shoot at bugs and you're fine with EXTREME levels of jank and terrible performance, you might want to consider getting the game if it ever goes on sale for half off or more, but you shouldn't do so with the expectation that it's gonna get better anytime soon. The game first came out in early access in May of 2023, enough time has passed, things shouldn't still be this bad.
