As much as I am in love with the game's story and characters, I gotta say, your time is better spent watching a play-through rather than playing it. The game is muddled with a comical amount of pointless busywork; between the never-ending grind for Books and the constant remaking and retrofitting of your builds, only a small fraction of your time will be spent progressing through the story. This is worsened by the game's Abnormality battles, for every one fun and interesting fight with engaging mechanics, there's three mind-numbingly boring and tedious fights. None of this is helped by the game's irritatingly vertical difficulty curve.
I know that difficulty can be a huge selling point for games (I mean, look at how popular Dark Souls is), and I do think quite a few of the Reception are quite fun despite their difficulty, but Ruina kinda ruins it with how much slaving over modifiers you have to do to progress. Sometimes beating a tough reception feels like coming back home after a long day at work, there is no dopamine rush, just relief that you're done babysitting some red edgelord who can't roll high to save her life.
TL;DR: Really fucking good story, soiled by E X T R E M E L Y tedious gameplay.
