DOOM 64 Reviews
Play the enhanced version of the original game released on the Nintendo 64 in 1997. Years have passed since you stopped Hell’s invasion of Earth. Quarantined for humanity’s safety, the UAC research facilities on Mars were abandoned and forgotten...until now.

Doom 64 is more Doom, and that's always a good thing. The aesthetics of this iteration take a lot of cues from the Playstation port of Doom, but everything has been reskinned top to bottom to provide a fresh experience. All the monsters and environments have great designs, and the ambient horror soundtrack sets the atmosphere. I have some minor complaints but overall it's a great game and the Nightdive remaster is super clean. Highly recommend you turn off the texture filtering, it makes the visuals horribly muddy and it's on by default.
Best bits: more classic Doom, fantastic visuals particularly in the Hell levels, most of the mechanical adjustments are well thought out, overall atmosphere
Could have been better: a few monsters are missing from the roster and that makes some levels kind of dull and repetitive, the super shotgun doesn't have an animation for reloading (a true crime), the middle levels (Hell castle theme) all kind of run together and go on too long

First off, I was under the impression that DOOM 64 was a rehash of all the original DOOM levels, but that is not at all the case. It's still DOOM as it should be but the tone of everything is pretty unique here and super gritty, if DOOM I & II are thrash metal, this is industrial nu metal.
My suggestion, if you want to play the DOOM games in order, is to play this after DOOM II and before DOOM 3, because this one bridges that gap perfectly, and yet it can stand alone.
The gameplay here is stellar, the ambiance and vibe of the levels, sound, and graphics are perfect for late night game sessions or Halloween time fun. Slayer is an excellent choice in place of the DOOM 64 soundtrack if you're not into the ambient style of it. The puzzles are neat and worth overcoming your urge for a guide, use your brain and get that serotonin for figuring something out. The end boss is a motherbitcher as all end bosses should be but man, be prepared and make sure you go in with full everything and all weapons.
Are you tired of the modern butt biscuits that are triple AAA games, always on rails and attempting to say so much but falling short of an interpretive dance and just surpassing an epileptic seizure??
Bro, treat yourself, shoot some fucking demons in the face and have fun with your precious time for very little money.
Play some DOOM 64 ya dingus.
9/10 - I love it much but it's one of those games that has parts that are a little too much for even my limits of masochism.

The game is pretty good, the only flaws that this game has are caused by something the devs weren't in control off, which is the fact that N64 (the console Doom 64 was inniitialy released on) lowkey sucked for a doom-like game. You are not going to have high monster counts / huge levels, it may not seem that bad, and it does, but at times you can get bored of killing Barons/Hell Knights over and over, which seems to be the most common enemy in this game. The other factor is that the devs didn't have enough memory (becuase the game was made for N64...) so it lacks some of Doom 2 monsters, like The Revenant and Arch-vile, which sucks for me, becuase i really liked those two,
The game however does try to be better, or atleast, different. Colored lighting, higher sprite resolution, more horror-esque atmosphere, various balance changes to weapons/monster, a new weapon(!) etc. You can see that clearly and my review doesn't need to say that becuase the game proves that by itself. The issue is, again, limited platform this tittle was made for.
Also some levels are frustrating but it's like only for first third of the game if not less

fun to go back and play some old Doom. Good level designs and atmosphere the only thing that's missing is the metal music which is unfortunate.

Doom 64 on PC (and on Xbox, PlayStation and Switch) isn't just a simple port; it's a genuine revitalization of a classic. Stepping back into those eerie, dimly lit corridors feels both nostalgic and refreshingly modern, thanks to the significant visual and performance enhancements. The game runs incredibly smoothly, and the crisp, updated graphics breathe new life into the demonic hordes. It's clear that this wasn't a rushed job; the developers took care to preserve the essence of Doom 64 while making it palatable for a contemporary audience.
The achievement list is a welcome addition, offering a nice set of goals to pursue. For those who remember the original game's secrets, you'll be pleased to know that the classic password system remains intact. In fact, these passwords can be a handy tool for unlocking certain achievements, offering a playful nod to the game's past.
What truly seals the deal is the price. Doom 64 frequently goes on sale, making it an absolute steal. For a few dollars, you're getting a meticulously updated version of a beloved classic. Whether you're a seasoned Doom veteran or a newcomer curious about the franchise's history, this Steam release of Doom 64 is a fantastic way to experience a unique chapter in the Doom saga. It's a testament to the enduring appeal of classic shooters, and a reminder of just how atmospheric and engaging Doom 64 was, and still is.

Classic Doom with polygonal levels. If you wanted some of that old but gold gameplay with more intricate level design, this is for you.

Doom 64 is actually a pretty solid game in the series. Good graphics (especially for the N64 at the time), a good challenge (especially in the higher difficulty setting), and the controls respond perfectly. The only major gripe I have is that it doesn't have the awesome metal music that accompanied Doom and Doom II. Instead, it offers up a moody and eerie atmospheric theme throughout much of the game (which I still enjoy, but it just isn't the same). But it does bring back awesome weapons like the Super Shotgun (my favorite) and the BFG. The Unmaker is quite a wicked weapon, especially once you get it fully upgraded. Still, diehard Doom fans should check this one out.

All levels completed on Watch Me Die (Ultra Violence).
This was a much better doom game than I was expecting, it is definitely my favourite classic doom game. All the levels were pretty good, the Unmaykr is sick as hell, the super shotgun kicks ass in this game and the new sounds and visuals is a nice breath of fresh air.
The Lost Levels were pretty good, kinda long and sometimes pretty annoying.

I used to play this on the N64. So the hours would never match. Great game, great bridge into Doom III. Would recommend.

DOOM 64 has some of the engine's most creative and atmospheric levels. It also has some of the most inscrutable level design. Headphones are strongly recommended, because if you don't pay attention to what direction noises are coming from you'll frequently be left to hunt for what changed when you press a button.
