I finally finished the game after 20 hours. Morbid: The Seven Acolytes is a 2D Top Down Souls-like game with a special mechanic that doesn't explained well by the developers, it's the Sanity system. Long story short, if your character has low Sanity, exp gain, and damage you dealt to enemies are all increased.
Story
- The game follows the plot with the main protagonist with no name, known as the last surviving Striver of Dibrom, a warrior clan trained to hunt down and slay the Seven Acolytes, each possessed by evil deities known as Gahars. As a Striver, you journey to slay the 7 Acolytes.
Gameplay - Combat
- The game is presented in a top-down 2D gameplay style, so you'll attack the enemies mostly diagonally or horizontally. The game has a weird weapon swinging animation that shows you where your weapons are supposed to hit, but in the end it doesn't. Disappointing.
- It takes a lot getting used to with the player's hit detection system. The hit box of the weapons is way better if you're going to perform heavy attacks.
- 2D enemies in video games are known to spam a lot of their attacks, this game is no stranger to that mechanic. Enemies will hit trigger their attack animation once you enter their trigger-zone. Stay for long they won't stop attacking you.
- Guns are so fun to use in this game. My personal favorite are the Crossbows for high damage output, and Rifles for which can penetrate through enemies within view.
- The weapon element system seems pointless, I notice a lot of same damage output using Fire, Electricity, Cold, Bleed and Poison. Most enemies doesn't seem to have any weaknesses, even the bosses. Unless you want to increase your weapon's strength, equip some of those elemental runes but I would prefer attack speed runes instead.
- Wide variety of weapons (Sword, Axe, Spear, Guns), but once you've got a stronger weapon than the one you're carrying, I suggest you to change your weapon.
Gameplay - Features
- The Sanity mode is a feature where when you have low sanity, exp gain, damage dealt to enemies are increased. There's also a catch, the enemies you killed will be revived, they are called as Spectres, they emerge as haunting, more powerful ghostly versions of the fallen foes when your Sanity meter drops too low.
- As the game title says, 7 Acolytes, which are the main bosses of this game. But don't worry, this game still provide some mini-bosses that are still fun to fight.
- Too many items (with inventory cap stuck for each item at 10pcs) and no other way to sell them other than discarding or storing them? yes. You will be forced to discard duplicate weapons in this game, since there's no point of saving them, unless you want to create multiple builds. I suggest you don't pick up every duplicate weapons you've encountered.
- You can equip Blessings to boost your character's passive skills. There are a total of 15 of them scattered throughout the world, best to find them all and pick your favorites!
- Has multiple save feature and cloud storage, that's nice.
- The game is seemingly open-world, but you have to unlock every shortcuts through story progression or exploration.
- Unlike other souls-like games, in this game when you die, you don't lose any exp for you to pick up. Which is a welcome addition for casual gamers.
Art Style
- Beautiful hand-drawn art, inspired by steampunk with Lovecraftian horror elements. You're going to love the Acolytes designs.
- 10/10 design for me.
Music
- I enjoy the music so much, steampunk inspired music.
Verdict
- Overall, I had fun, but it lacks replayability. I love the guns, sword swinging animation and the hit-box is very bad. My inventory is already full and there's no more reason to go back and do something different other than levelling up again and max out all of my Blessings. Which is a chore. There's no more reason to strengthen up your character after maxing out your level, weapons and runes have fixed stats too. It was a fun ride to defeat all of the Acolytes.
- Here's a tip for everyone who wants to level up faster, consume Limbs or any items that drains your Sanity to zero, let your Sanity stay that way so you can level up way more faster.
