A very fun uniquely South African game. The devs responded quickly to suggested improvements after their initial release which is great to see.
Definitely worth the money.

I got this game basically on release, and it hasn't been updated since, there are still some bugs which just aren't being patched.
Its a funny game, but compatibility is meh and the bugs are damned annoying.
Unless they update it or do SOMETHING with it, i cant recommend it.

---> ORIGINAL REVIEW <---
First off , I'd like to say that I really want to give the game a neutral review rather than a negative one because the game isn't a bad experience , but rather falls short in some important areas that make it difficult to justify a positive review. The game bleeds personality and a unique "South Africanacity" that is impossible to get in any other game on this platform and you can immediately see the passion and drive that went into making the game. I want as many people as possible , not just in South Africa , but around the world , to buy and play this game , build a community and get people talking about games and game development in South Africa
With that out of the way , I'll share my initial experiences with the game (at 6 - 7 hours in , on release day)
Art:
The art in this game is very stylized, which is this case is very good! The cartoon-ish art style perfectly compliments the game (which is meant to be a tongue-in-cheek experience) and I can appreciate the attention to detail in the background on different levels , both decor and characters
Dialogue:
Absolutely amazing! Like , near tears from laughing at the incredible b**lsh*t the characters say and do , and near tears because of how incredibly well stereotypes are done and the South African slang and expressions and ... just tit maa boet
undenaahbly and most Incredibly tit
Music:
It's Klapping boet !
no seriously , it's really good.
constant , pumping EDM to keep the adrenaline flowing and the brain receiving dopamine in a desperate attempt to just maybe beat this f***ing boss because his attacks are p**s k*k and I wish horrible things from heaven above to this character on my computer screen and I REALLY don't want to start over at the beginning of a level AGAIN ...
which brings us to my few issues with the game
Difficulty:
The game isn't easy , that's okay , I like a good challenge , you like a good challenge and this game brings challenge , but I would argue that a lot of the challenge doesn't come from the GAME being challenging itself but rather from design decisions I personally don't understand.
Examples of what I mean:
- Key-binds and Key mapping: Nope , you're stuck with {wasd} for movement , which is okay , but then {yuihjk} for actions ?? Did i mention stuck with ? Jip , you can't rebind to what you feel more comfortable with. I'll admit that it starts to feel natural after an hour or two , but it's quite a jarring change to what is standard in gaming today and not having a choice in binds feels restrictive <<< KEY BINDING HAS BEEN FIXED ; AS A PLAYER YOU CAN NOW USE YOUR OWN CUSTOM BINDS >>>
- level length: levels are a decent size (about 15 to 30 minutes) , with hilarious mini-bosses and bosses at the mid and end point of levels respectively , but in between ?
Wave on waves of enemies ... not difficult enemies ... just ... why so many ? And why so many hits to klap one out ?
and then it's the 50th time you've heard Eddy say the same one-liner and the 100th time you've heard that boet say he's going to moer you in an aggressive and humorous manner
And dying sends you back to the beginning of a level ... back to more waves and waves that take 15 to 20 minutes to clear just to have another go at the boss <<< CHECKPOINTS HAVE BEEN ADDED , WHICH LEAVES THIS ISSUE REDUNDANT >>>
You aren't getting better at refining the skills you need to beat the boss , you're getting better at clearing waves of enemies that don't help you beat the boss at all and you're just forced to clear waves over and over again
at the time of writing , I'm stuck on the 3rd level boss , Hardest Eddy (I'll admit that he's both tit looking and very accurately named to match difficulty) . I know i'll figure out the pattern i need eventually and i'll klap his face indented and re-indented , but going through 22 waves AND a mini-boss (roughly 15 to 20 minutes) just to try again is frustrating to say the least , and not the kind of frustrating that makes you want to try again
*SUGGESTION*
Difficulty settings that aren't just ----> Hard , Hard and Hard ( I see what you did ... I laughed ) But maybe something like :
= Easy : (Or middle class private school laaightie difficulty , whatever) Checkpoints after every room , especially before bosses , resets your lives to 3x
=Medium : Checkpoint after mini boss , lives at whatever it was when you klaped mini boss
=Hard : Of course , we know what this is already :P
and maybe unlockable
= MEGA SUPER HARD : only one life per level ;)
This gives people a chance to learn boss patterns and attacks , so they can moer them on hard difficulty
*SUGGESTION OVER*
Game Mechanics:
Alright , so I said the game was hard right ? Well , not so much when you're dealing with normal waves really. I've easily breezed through waves after waves by jump kicking , stunning , standing over a pile of knocked sods , spamming the punch button , rinse repeat.
There are some enemies that make you think a bit more like bottle thrower , which you knock out first so you don't have to deal with him , and pretty boy , who blocks and reflects your forth attack. Other than that I just breezed through merrily jump kicking and spamming punch.
Maybe make blocking a more useful ability? Maybe only let it drain stamina when you successfully block something instead of draining outright ? I personally don't know , but I have a lot of experience dealing with waves and they aren't difficult at all , so more varied combat might be a suggestion from my side
But i'll admit , the mechanics make sense and they feel good to use ! :D
Bugs:
Alright I'm nitpicking at this point , I know it's release day , there are going to be bugs , but I love this game and I would love for it to be the best version of itself!
- Volume resets to default when exiting and re-entering the game (after you've changed volume settings)
- Single player Continue button is bugged , it either makes the game not respond to input or (after you've restarted the game and try to click continue again) sets you to another level , specifically the rugby themed level I haven't even unlocked yet
(I'll add more when I remember them and/or find more )
SUMMARY:
Okay , so I like this game. It really has a unique charm and it's fun to play , but the grind is hectic , the waves can get frustrating when they block your progress to boss and you hear the same voice lines over and over but ultimately , the game is still a diamond in the rough . It just needs the little but more polish and with the amount of positive reviews out there and the friends I've spoken to , it has the support of a small but growing community to get there ! I'm sure my review will change to positive very soon <3
Thanks for making us proud Cali4Ways ! You klapped the tits off this one !

Great game and amazing South African humour. I felt my testosterone level rise up to level 69 after starting up this game but there are some problems.
The main problem is that there are barely any checkpoints, not even after a boss fight. It would be nice to at least have some checkpoints after every boss fight.
But none the less, it's a good game.

The game is great fun and a cool idea, but the game doesn't feel like it is ready for a release. There are a few issues that really need to be addressed before I would consider this game worth playing.
Firstly, the game is terribly unoptimized with frequent FPS drops, which shouldn't happen on a game with simple graphics, even on a GTX 950 and i7 as I have. The loading times are also quite slow.
The keyboard controls are very uncomfortable and reconfiguration is not possible through settings. The controls also become completely unresponsive between all the FPS drops. Keep in mind I did not have a chance to play with a controller, which presumably will make the experience much better.
Finally, the settings menu really needs work. There are basically no configuration options beyond sound volumes. There isn't even an option to change the resolution of the game, which makes it feel very incomplete.
I would love to enjoy this game further, but as it is now it is unplayable. Please try and address these issues, then I will definitely change my review.

Listen okes. This game is bloody lekker. Now I know the clever ous are going to tune that it needs polish or whatwhat, but let's be frank - it's very lekker. You're a flippin' huuuuge oke and you drib other huge okes. Most PC-game playing small nerd okes will never experience this, so this is the ultimate game for you.
The animations are sick, the chirps are on point (100% no lies, I kid you not, on flippin' point) and the humour is priceless. Now can you pay the two hunnies please, it's not even expensive man and it'll make sure that these dev-nerd okes get to make even more schweet games like this in future.
If you don't dig the keyboard controls get a gamepad and you'll be sorted. Honestly this game will make you feel even better than a course of whinnie or dyna...Sure there's some potholes and some bugs and kak but that's normal - these nerd okes will sort it out quick quick anyway.

Pros:
- Hilarious (if somewhat niche) concept
- Great graphic style, very polished
- Top notch, authentic voice acting
- The dev's have responded quickly to player feedback and added more configuration options as well as more frequent checkpoints
Cons:
- Still punishlingly hard, it takes a lot of repeating to get through even the early stages
- Beat em up style gameplay is probably not for everyone

Okay, I've sat on this review for about a day in-order to consider it a bit and weigh my personal bias against my actual experience with the game.
Being a South African is really the only way you are going to 'get this game' and the funny stereo-types it plays off. Lucky I am one and can without a doubt say it hits it's mark very well during the campaign.
Hardy Eddy is a strangely profound idiot on a simple mission to find his girl before the end of the long weekend. During his search he teams up with his best mate Mod-C (co-op partner), and together they embark on creatine fueled quest which primarily involves 'dribbing okes' squarely in the face.
It's a simple narrative and that's all it needs to be. The artwork and animations compliment the comedic style and overall they give the game a great feel. Unfortunately this is where I have to leave the compliments behind and move onto some of the more negative aspects of the game (most of which can be fixed given some time).
If I was to sum the main problem I had with it up in a word it would be... frustrating. It manages to frustrate on a number of levels, but primarily in the way it begins to feel like a grind due to it's 'difficulty'. It's not difficult in that it is hard to understand what is required, it is difficult in that it seems buggy.
Grindy boss battles with odd hit boxes and untelegraphed, nearly undodgable attacks end up sending you back to earlier parts of the level. This means you are forced to knock over the same foot soldiers over and over again before you can even attempt another shot at your main target. I realise this may have been done in order to simulate an arcade cabinet style side-scroller, but in order for it to work I feel it needs to both improve the boss-fights as well as expand upon them a little.
The levels themselves are well thought out but having to replay them over and over again becomes incredibly tiresome Particularly nearer to the end where a joke is used to allow the game to reuse assets. You begin to question why there isn't much difference between the ascending V's and it just seems like a lot of padding.
There are actual bugs that also show up now and then. Power-ups being dropped off in annoyingly unreachable places, bad guys getting stuck and level completion prompts failing to appear. At some points I even found myself staring at a blank screen waiting for the next chapter to load (It did eventually), and I did have to quit once as the 'retry menu' got stuck over an already restarted game.
I fully appreciate what the guys and girls at Califourways have done and can only commend them on their efforts. Despite its flaws I was reminded of home while playing Boet Fighter, and I look forward to returning home in the future so long as South Africa keeps on fostering talented guys and girls like those at this studio.
