I bought this game at 90% off and still found it kinda disappointing. As a horror game it just isn't scary enough, too light in atmosphere. In terms of gameplay it's also lackluster. You walk around, point your flashlight at people and then shoot them. Sometimes you also need to point your light at objects or furniture trying to kill you, that's about it. I played on hard difficulty and always had plenty of batteries and ammunition so resource management was never a concern, maybe it's different in the Nightmare difficulty but you have to beat the game first before unlocking it. I found the story and characters to be largely annoying as well.
I would only recommend Alan Wake as maybe a light horror for people who want very basic gameplay and nothing too scary. For players looking for a more intense experience it will not impress.

god this game is really bad. for the same reason bed of chaos sucked in dark souls 1, this game combines the jump and dodge button leading to some really frustrating combat encounters where you get hit unfairly. following that, the combat is excruciatingly boring, consisting mostly of waiting until you can actually deal damage to enemies before shooting them a few times then repeating the process for around 10 hours
EDIT: you can dodge by pressing the sprint button before you get hit, which makes for a much easier time. my point still stands though

Back to Bright Falls with Alan Wake Remastered — and the nightmare still shines.
I played the original on Xbox 360, so firing it up on PC was pure nostalgia. The core loop is intact (and still fun): burn away shadows with your flashlight, then finish the Taken with revolvers, shotguns, rifles, or the ever‑satisfying flare gun. Flares push back crowds; flash‑bangs erase them outright — perfect when you’re swarmed in a dark forest at 2 a.m. It still feels like Max Payne meets a Stephen King episode.
Atmosphere is where this game wins. Six TV‑style episodes deliver classic small‑town‑horror vibes: misty pines, humming streetlights, and that lonely Cauldron Lake. The story of a blocked writer searching for his kidnapped wife is strong, but you only get the full picture by collecting manuscript pages, tuning in to radios, and watching in‑game TV. Completionists will love that; casual players might miss key beats.
Visuals are sharper and lighting is gorgeous, yet the decade‑old animations peek through, and combat can feel repetitive once you’ve mastered the flashlight‑then‑shoot rhythm. Still, at a sale price of a couple of dollars this is an absolute steal: a moody action‑thriller that holds up surprisingly well.
Verdict: A cozy horror classic worth revisiting — especially if you’ve never walked the shadowy trails of Bright Falls.

The story is fantastic. I love how it's episodic, like a TV show with plot twists and cliffhangers. But the thing that keeps me from having fun is the combat. There is hardly any enemy variety and the whole game is just shine the flashlight and shoot a few times. If you can power through tedious, repetitive combat, I'd say go for it. But if you get frustrated easily like me, go watch a playthrough on youtube for the story.

This was definitely a challenging game for me... Primarily because I don't ever play anything like this. X.X
Someone told me or I saw somewhere that this had a good story, so I had to check it out. Thankfully it's mostly thriller than horror and only gave me weird dreams. I think that one episode of Night Springs was far nastier than anything in the game. ^^"
I gotta say though... Now I understand why people play these kinds of games. The thrill. The heart racing. Similar to the effects of that one time I drank 4 energy drinks and thought I saw ghosts.
And in the end... It wasn't a bad experience. Story was alright. Birds suck deeply and who knew that Flare Guns and Flash Bangs were so damn powerful?!
It only took me this long to finish it... Because of the way I play. That and there is this room... Where you turn on the radio to play the "War" song and well... I couldn't beat that room for the life of me on Normal. I had no choice but to restart on a different setting... And the game still took pity on me and gave me the "Beat the game on Normal" Achievement. Thanks, I suppose.
Otherwise, I can see that maybe I shouldn't be avoiding such games. As long as they have something that interests me. Heh heh.
Thanks you. :> :)

Absolutely fantastic outside of chapter 3 which just took too long and had me looking up how many chapters this game had.
Took a little getting use to not having to aim to use a weapon, has 2010 syndrome where it's extremely obvious where a major battle/boss fight will happen.
Loved the story, loved the mechanics, driving was wonky but it's few and far between so i can excuse it. My only regret is taking so long to finally play it.

i like the fact that i can read the pages to know whats going to happen and the flash light with the gun thing. the only downside is the graphics but it's an old game what do you expect

In NCIS every episode has to involve boats or nautical crime somehow, this game is similar where no matter what happens the character has to end up in a spooky forest at night every 25 minutes.
I'm unsure if this is meant to be a horror game when it asks you to kill hundreds of the same enemies with little challenge even giving you an item to stunlock them from the very beginning.
I thought that maybe this was just good for its time and aged poorly but then I remembered re4 released before this and clears it
Story over gameplay
Rating ★★☆☆☆
The idea here seems pretty solid. It reminds me a little of the TellTale games, except there's more action.. but only just.
What little gameplay there is has you running from one end of a map to the other. It's very scripted, with map markers constantly telling you where you're going and why you're going there.
Most of the story takes place at night, using light as a weapon in the form of flashlights and flares, with street lighting acting as a safe harbour, allowing you to rest and recover health.
The enemies are easy enough to deal with, assuming you have ammo for your guns, which is often the biggest challenge with each engagement. The other challenge is fighting the awkward controls and terrible camera angles.
Use light to weaken the enemy, then shoot them with your gun. Rinse and repeat.

I found this gameplay loop pretty boring, but i kept going because i thought the story would pick up the slack. It did not.
I have never been much of a horror fan, so maybe others might enjoy the story.
