Steam asks me - "Can you like this game?"
You're kidding - for someone who grew up on old-school shooters like Duke Nukem, Doom and Blood, Cultic was a refreshing breath of nostalgia and fond childhood memories.
Jason, my friend, make a second chapter. Don't rush, it's not a sin to wait for this.

First of all, I want to start by saying that Cultic has nothing in common with Blood. Nor any Build Engine game (unless you count A.W.O.L. and NAM, which are the most questionable besides Redneck Rampage, which puts things into perspective). In fact, it has nothing in common with boomer shooters. It's a game that barely even understands concept of video games, since it's completely detached from the whole progress of video game development history, and for any other game, that would make something "outsider art", or even revolutionary. But not for Cultic. It's a game that plays closer to what an old military shooter like Vietcong would play like, and even then, it barely scrapes by, it should not be justified as a solo project.
The creator didn't really challenge himself much while working on the enemy variation, I'm not one of those guys who think shooting basic chaingunners and shotgunners in doom can get boring, and I understand that these enemy variations are necessary just so you can work out on their pathfinding. Well, the enemies still have a broken pathfinding. To the point that they can barely even open doors for themselves, and then get stuck in it. Which is normal, since properly coding doors is hard. But then they get stuck in the water, and even each other. You can easily count on fingers where they DON'T get stuck. And other enemy types that don't have tendency of getting stuck. And who are trying to do something without harming themselves in the process. Which would result in you counting… your basic doom melee weapon.
(It's a fist)
Which would be the only DOOM connection this game might have.
Enemy types include:
1) Cultists, all 5 types that differ from their weapon preferences. (Hatchet, pistol, shotgun, SMG, grenade launcher)
Hatchet cultists can throw their melee at you, showcasing their amazing ability of friendly fire. Shotgun cultists can throw dynamite, that ricochet off a wall and kills them. They can also walk around wearing shields like a Resident Evil 4 knock off.
2) Skeletons, that behave like cultists, but they are cooler since they are skeletons. Also they are more aggressive.
3) Cultists with red Yakuza heat meter energy above them. They are just as aggressive as in Yakuza titles.
4) Elite cultists that learned how to crouch (but they also prone if they have sniper rifle).
5) Three zombie variations that just prance and pounce on you.
6) Spooky ghosts that act like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s controller, while tossing props at you.
7) Skullmonkey acting as a mini boss. It's a zombie, but faster.
8) Darkwood's chomper, that acts like a zombie, but can also spit on you.
So do I, but I won't.
9) Chainsaw guy that can throw grenades at you and is too lazy to set up bear traps, so he throws them alongside the grenades.
10) Pyro dude that sets everything on fire to piss you off.
Included in the interlude episode:
11) Undead cop that acts like an elite cultist (that means they do the forbidden kneecap crouch), but this time with a revolver.
There are 4 upgrades in total:
Damage
Capacity
Fire-rate/Accuracy
And one useless alternative fire for each gun (It really sucks)
Let's describe the guns:
1) Fists. They are your hands, so they exist, since it's an FPS. But forget they exist for other gameplay purposes other than holding your guns. You can also kick, but you can't stagger enemies, the sole purpose of using kick in other games, You just shove them and give them more distance to shoot you. Stagger exists for hatchet only, and is barely noticeable in this game.
2) Hatchet. Your first real weapon. You can wail it on cultists and toss it around, which is like tossing dice, since you would want to decapitate your enemies, but the throw loses inertia quickly, and the hitbox is small.
3) Pistol. Bad accuracy without the upgrade. Alt fire: Shoot 3 bullets quickly with no accuracy. Most of the weapons have this crap for alt fire.
4) Shotgun. Large spread without the upgrade, but that's ok for a shotgun. But it also has bad damage for body shots and only headshots kill. Two shells and slow reloading without the upgrades. You can increase the knockback on yourself and the enemy, for some reason ([strike] dev might be thinking [/strike] it's a speedrun strat).
5) Rifle. For the first time, your best friend for sniping enemies from a distance. Which you're going to do, a lot, if you want to survive.
6) Sniper rifle. Replaces standard rifle. Can get extra zoom with an upgrade. Wow. You also get it late. Bow wow.
7) Submachine gun. Shares Pistol ammo. Wastes same ammo as Pistol.
8) Grenade launcher. Can throw a contact grenade. Or you can hop a grenade. Either way you get splash damage from skill issue.
9) Dynamite. If it won't be as good as Blood, OR close, then don't bother. This isn't even an inch close. You can also throw a horizontally spreading stack of individual dynamite pieces for less AOE and zero damage.
10) Molotov. Like dynamite, but also ignites. Combine with dynamite to die quickly.
11) Flamethrower. Huge DPS, huge ammo drain. Use to skip huge enemies. Alternative spews a bad rolly polly version of another horrible attack for napalm launcher from Blood, because the only thing this game learned from Blood is to die quickly, by somehow being a x10 slower game.
Interlude weapons (COOL BELOW!!!):
12) Nightstick. Worse than a hatchet, and can't be thrown.
13) Revolver. Like a pistol, but more damage.
14) Semi-auto shotgun. Straight shotgun upgrade.
In total, you get a lot of same-y enemies and a lot of bad, basic weaponry. In a meta where you have to shoot first, quick, efficient and not get hit. In a game that glitches out the enemies and weapons that are not satisfying. And a slow-mo gimmick that is not fun, since it slows you down to a crawl alongside the enemy, in an already boring game. That's it.
But what if, some cool looking levels might actually carry this mess, right?
No, they're just open spaces with pixel hunting that the dev calls sniping. Or enclosed spaces that are straight up dungeon crawler looking tunnels with somehow even narrower corridors. There is nothing memorable to be found in this game, even the skybox remains the same throughout the whole thing.
Bonus nit-kicking, because it's unworthy of the effort of being picked:
1) Very long loadings, even from quicksaves.
2) When starting a map, it starts with some enemies already dead.
3) If enemies get inside water, and you load a save of that point in time, they automatically get killed in water.
4) Also loading is so broken, that it makes enemies lose their aggro on you.
5) Some enemies are counted as two enemies inside a single enemy.
6) Some ambient sounds are badly looped.
7) Survival mode is bland and barebones.
