awesome game, must play for any fans of Blood. Also the final boss for chapter 1 was pretty fun unlike most retro shooters

Very polished and satisfying boomer shooter, the game currently only has 1 chapter (10 levels) and an interlude, but you're getting your moneys worth, promise.

Cultic is just about everything I could ever ask for in a game like this. It has a story with a good hook and a consistent theme. It has a gameplay loop that I cannot even put into words how amazing it feels. The arenas of cultists that are dangerous, but go down easy to just about every powerful weapon you've been getting (especially the awesome dynamite that gives blood a run for its money), broken up by fights with more exotic enemies that soak up more punishment or throw shit at you, or both; makes it so amazing, tense, and atmospheric. I never feel safe, but I never feel weak. This game does so many things good and even some new things great. I am so excited for chapter 2. Because, despite how much there is of this game, I just want more.

Upon writing this review, i've only completed the interlude, along with a portion of the first chapter while on vc with my girlfriend. it was a pretty enjoyable experience, we were both pretty captivated by the storyline, but also didn't really understand what was going on. i like the concept of having law enforcement working with the cult, it seems very creative, yet realistic since there is a lot of corruption within law enforcement nowadays.
the art style of this game is cool, the enemies are mostly just the cult members wearing their robes, but there is a pretty interesting boss in the interlude which i won't spoil. i definitely applaud the devs on their creativity with the levels and atmosphere of the game, but the enemies are pretty standard for a boom shoot game.
it was a bit unnerving to see random cult logos placed in rooms surrounded by the american flag, almost like two solidified ideas were clashing together in my mind. on one hand, there's the cult which represents evil, but there's also the american flags which are supposed to represent justice, not sure how else to describe it but it was pretty cool to physically see the contrast between something like a cult, and law enforcement, as well as how these two things can intertwine within the cultic-verse.
Seeing piles of dead bodies everywhere, or randomly seeing a severed-in-half man cooking over a fire, was also really unexpected, yet helped to build a more immersive experience which i enjoyed.
the weapons are fun, not too complicated or anything, easy to use, and the movement is pretty good too. i like how you can throw the hatchets, but i've yet to get any really cool kills with this feature. the lever action rifle is really fun to use, i like going for headshots with it.
so yeah, not much to really say. get this game if you like good boom shoots, 10/10

This game is fantastic. As someone who loved the aesthetic and brutality of BLOOD (the difficulty and the gore) this game, while approaching some of its core mechanics differently (Dynamite, fire, weapon upgrades etc.), keeps everything feeling satisfying and modern while keeping the spirit of what made its inspiration so tense and captivating.
Do not mistake it, this is certainly NOT BLOOD despite it having similar motifs; specifically the hit-scan hell it categorized along with the whole 'throwing dynamite around blind corners to not get decimated immediately' thing on higher difficulties.
As a DOOM player the cautious play-style of BLOOD was very hard to hone, though as said prior, CULTIC attempts to converge both of these styles with a dash of immersive sim. It does all of this in several ways, but chiefly it gives you the opportunity to shoot *first*.
CULTIC has very large open spaces and enemies aggro at a specific sightline range from the player. This means not only can you throw explosives around corners as prep for an encounter, you can play the same 'hit by a stray bullet from halfway across the map' gambit as they do; with the added bonus of this game featuring a full blown sniper rifle to do so. I always thought these scoped guns in boomer shooters were gimmicks until now but CULTIC having sniper enemies and allowing you to get the jump on cultists gave me real incentive to use it (it is my favourite gun now). These open maps, their verticality/complexity room-to-room, and the physics objects they contain also lend to many ways to approach these encounters outside of what is usual for these types of games, which definitely makes you feel like you have options and strategic freedom regarding how you tackle a problem.
This is not even mentioning the DOOM aspects, the weapon upgrades and movement tech. The movement tech especially ups this game coming from stuff like ULTRAKILL, as sliding and kicking to go faster become pivotal tools in the larger, more crowded arenas. Weapon upgrades are nice ways of pushing exploration and secret finding in any game, this is no different; the replayability it adds is also evident.
I have not even tackled the story which while simple, I liked a lot! I tend to enjoy grittier and grounded backdrops to stuff like this and it really scratched that itch for me. Overall, I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys boomer shooters and are looking for a fresh take on the BLOOD formula.
The only thing this is missing is Caleb (Stephen please do a voice in this game I BEG).
Note: I did not realize how many shooters I like are in all caps

The downside of current age with games is that there are simply so many I don't have time to even take notice of most of them. As life gets busy it is downright impossible to keep track of everything, unless I took it as a job, in that case it would probably lose its enjoyment...Regardless this thing somehow avoided my radar and all I can say is that I am very glad I somehow stumbled upon it. This is a gem of a game,
Boomer shooter? Yeah sure. I really don't like that name, but whatever. This game is fantastic. It's like taking some aesthetic of Blood and mashing it with RE4. You get tight precise combat that can be unforgiving and yet utterly visceral and satisfying. You are some detective looking for a kidnapped girl..."Save me Leon".
Anyway you wake up in a pile of dead bodies (I live again) and go to town on these cultists. Now we get to business. It's the 1960s and our weapon lineup kind of lines up with the times, perhaps few dacades back. Nearly in line with 20s (unless you count the China Lake, but hey I am willing to forgive that one). You get an absolutely wonderful lineup of firearms. I am biased here. I own at least half a dozen lever action firearms so when I see one in the game I'm in my element. You got the broomhandle, a mare's leg, good ole sawed off double barrel, STEN and so forth. Each gun also can be upgraded to be even more awesome.
Shooting has a fantastic feedback, and damage is localized so you better be aiming for the noggin. Also the feedback for it is hilarious. You will know from space when you score a headshot. Honestly I loved the combat. It's more tactical in sense that err you will be dropping dead a lot until you figure it out. It's not like Blood's army of one kind of combat. More like in line what Selaco did but slow it down a little and make it more in line to how RE4 encounters went. Guns pack a punch, enemies kill you in a blink. Figure it out.
To supplement this you have a wonderful movement system. You dodge (thank you Jason for implementing Unreal's double tap to dodge, you made this aging bugger happy). You can slide, kick and air kick. Everything you need to put boot up the ass of poor saps in your way. Combine that with your shotgun and that before mentioned mare's leg and fellas we have one mean contender on our hands....I really really wish MC was not silent. I would have loved one liners like Caleb had. But alas that would break the atmosphere this game is building. Still I would be out of myself to hear Caleb's insane laughter as some of these fools are getting burned to a crisp...
Anyway back to tools, you have the dynamite. Think of it like Blood but you can do even more. You can throw it on the ground and shoot it (even via hotkey while using other guns...lovley). You can gauge your toss, you can split the bundle to make it a cluster bomb, you can tie it to a molotov to make a large napalm type bomb and the game throws these things at you like candy. Go to town, start chucking and watch the pieces fly and screams fill your ears. All this combined, guns, dynamite/molotov and movement and you have on hell of a solid foundation. Combat is chef's kiss. It's like Selaco, but with Blood flavor. I love it.
Atmosphere of the game is creepy, from the lighting to the music to the enemies. Doesn't really bother me as long as I'm pulling the trigger but it is done very well.
Campaign is kind of short, but there will be more. Episode two will be sold separately. Take it as you will. I am buying it when it releases.
All I was thinking as I kept playing this, is why in the ever loving hell he didn't put in a SAA in there. A good ole Colt Single Action Army, would have been perfect....and then the interlude happens and we get something like a model 27. Oh wait! There is more, you can upgrade to fan fire it. Forget that it's a double action revolver. We fan firing this magnum. More? He throws in a browning auto 5... Ok...If the next episode ends up having a trench gun, a 1887, Thompson or a 1911 I am gonna lose my shit. The gun nut in me is going haywire.
Listen folks, you like shooting things? You like tight controls, well thought out mechanics and rewarding combat with avenues of approach? You like lots of well put in secrets in level design and levels that actually feel engaging? Did you like Blood, Resident Evil 4 or are fancy to Selaco? Get this shit. It's rockin'.
