Jedna z pierwszych gier RTS w 3D.

After finishing most of the campaign (completed Rimtech and Milagro, halfway through Neuropa at the time of this review), I can see why this game didn't build a similar following to the likes of Starcraft. It feels like lots of untapped potential caused by insufficient tech - if this game was made a few years later, I'd like to think it would be the polished experience it deserves to be.
As it stands though, one thing stands out as by far the biggest weakness of the game - the nightmare that is unit pathing. While ground combots, for the most part, find their way across terrain fine(except for super long distances where one or two can take a wrong turn and break off from the pack), the vehicles are entirely incapable of moving themselves around without getting stuck on one another, or making weird circles on open field before going the direction you want them. You cannot effectively set a group of hovertrucks to collect metajoules because they will ALWAYS get stuck on one another when they arrive at the lava pool, and you have to detangle them one by one. Same goes for tanks, especially Milagro ones which behave like bricks on wheels. Flying Combots that are fully ranged also behave sometimes like they're running out of space in the air, and you always have at least one flying directly into melee range of the target, or making constant circles without shooting or landing at all, often while being fired upon by anti-air defenses(which is super dangerous because combots have 0 defense in the air).
That being said, I've spent 25 hours on the campaign and plan to finish the whole thing because the rest of the game is quite fun. Combot part variety allows you to "build-a-bear" whatever you currently need, and there is an option to save your favorite combinations to fast-queue them into production(Ctrl+F5 to F9 I believe). You can also steal combot parts from the enemy factions for your own use, including researching them so you can make more and create the ultimate counter, which is especially effective against Milagro and Neuropa, who tend to be weak to the damage type most of their own weapons have.
The three layers of combat have their good and bad sides - they increase variety, since Combots can't get underground, and Orbit is limited enough that you'll mostly engage with jets. The downsides... that underground exists. With how horrible vehicles are to use and navigate with, you're forced to babysit your tank division as it tries to squeeze through drilled tunnels to attack whatever the enemy's built there, and destroying said buildings will take forever since many of them have well over 1000 hp while even Milagro's beefy hard hitting tanks do at most somewhere around 12 damage per shot, and artillery pieces, while much stronger, are built and moved at the speed of molasses, and like to shoot walls.
Games have also been much longer than what I'd expect from an RTS nowadays, since you're more than likely going to spend a good chunk of time building up your solar panels in orbit and expanding your base so that you can field a big enough force to defeat the enemy(which, again, is not helped by buildings having a ton of health). I tend to turtle through the campaign with no trouble, and I'm positive I could finish some of the missions faster... But my fastest completion was 40 minutes.
Overall, this is a game that should have been made at least in 2003. Better pathing alone would have catapulted the fun levels tremendously. Despite the flaws though, it has that unique style that you can hear in the music and see in the models that keeps drawing me back in. It could also be nostalgia, since the first time I played this game I was 10, and it was an amazing experience back then. I doubt we'll see a game like Metal Fatigue ever again.
