Cloak & Dagger's new game takes us to a setting no less exotic than Legend of the Hand did. This time we take a trip to Sumatra. A holiday in a tropical paradise? Well, not so much. Sumatra: The Fate of Yandi highlights the darker side of this - and many other - lush islands. The invasion and expansion of civilization - an ever-hungry predator. The titular Yandi, the main character, is actually part of the problem - and has to face the consequences and make up for it.
The game starts with Yandi caught up in a workplace accident - which leaves him stranded, lost, helpless and alone. So you, the player, set off on the most basic mission. Survive. Get help. Get home. In your quest through the seemingly endless greenery you'll encounter many a dangerous beast, odiously smelling plants - and last but not least, people who just want to live their lives their way. And you - an employee of a logging company - are making it harder every day. So you'll have to prove yourself to gain their trust - because you're on their turf and won't get out without their help. And the jungle turns out a deeper and darker place than you'd imagine. The journey will be one of discovery. Of mistakes and regrets. Of bonding and overcoming fears.
The jungle of Sumatra is a beast of its own. It's truly spectacular in size - and will have you run to and fro through its green maze A LOT. Luckily, navigating through the woods - that all seem to look the same to your unexperienced eye, spoiled by civilization - isn't THAT difficult. A couple rounds through the jungle and you should know what's where. Just keep your eyes out for possible open paths - and map out locations of interest if necessary. It's a pity there's no in-game map - and sometimes fast travel would've really made your life easier. The puzzles seem fair - some pretty simple (use things in your pocket on the nearest object), some more complex, requiring multiple steps to complete, overcoming unexpected hurdles - and some help from the locals, too. You're a stranger to these parts - and their knowledge of nature will be vital. Some of the lore is clearly tongue-in-cheek - but some might actually be true. Hope I'll never have to find out! My first encounter with civilization in the depths of the jungle wasn't as harsh. There's some basic fiddling with broken technology - luckily requiring no tech savviness. Most of the time the resources are either close at hand or you'll be able to McGyver your way through them. Again, classic adventuring! One small hitch: I stumbled upon two situations in which I had no idea you're supposed to repeat an action two or more times - especially the latter one was frustrating, as there seemed to be some event trigger, but I couldn't tell what it was and succeeded by trial and error only.
The visual style of the game is simple but elegant. It's lo-res, and the characters' faces are blank, with no details such as eyes, noses or lips - but the colors speak loud. The jungle is deep and green - but other colors seem mostly muted, furthering the sensation that it's not an exotic paradise. It's a real place, with its own problems and worries. A beautiful place in imminent danger. The audio also highlights nature. Music often gives way to birds chirping or sounds of rain - a deeply relaxing eperience.
Sumatra is a story that starts out simple - but as you delve deeper, it unfolds new layers, until it all comes together. During his quest Yandi matures and realizes things about himself. He sees himself and the world around him in a new light. Which is a great takeaway from a game - and perhaps a prompt for the player to do some introspection too?

Bardzo prosta przygodówka - zarówno pod względem rozgrywki, jak i grafiki. Pozwala to cofnąć się do czasów gier typu point and click z lat 90.
Polecam grę każdemu kto chcę odbyć podróż sentymentalną do lat 90 i zanurzyć w niebanalną opowieść o prostym Indonezyjczyku pracującym przy wycince lasu tropikalnego.
