A solid foundation, but lacking in some key areas
First of all, I want to say that I did enjoy my time with this game. I don’t regret purchasing it, and I had fun playing. That said, I also came away feeling a bit disappointed.
The game gave me the impression of something you'd expect on a Game Boy rather than a modern PC release. If that retro simplicity was the developer's goal, that’s absolutely valid—but personally, I found certain areas lacking. Had this been an early access title, I would say it shows real promise. But as a full release, a few aspects stood out as needing improvement:
Save Management: The game only saves at checkpoints, with no manual or autosave—even when quitting. This means unexpected interruptions can lead to significant lost progress. Additionally, cloud saves are mentioned in the game description but don’t appear to be implemented/ working.
Content & Depth: The overall experience felt a bit short and underdeveloped. There are features like character progression (via weapons), pet talents, and a monster-strengthening garden minigame—but each feels a bit shallow. Pet talents, for example, are bland and come with downsides that don’t add much strategy, and the garden is static: no upgrades, no expansion—what you see at the start is what you get until the end.
Balance Issues: Even after a reported 500% boost to player damage, I still felt underpowered. One of my monsters, meanwhile, could two-shot the final boss, despite supposed stat penalties. That kind of imbalance undercuts the challenge. Additionally, getting your monsters to behave as expected can be unreliable.
Readability & QoL: There's no "real" map, which makes exploring confusing. The tutorial misses some basics—like what certain icons under enemy monsters mean (and I still don’t know, even after finishing the game). At times, damage just “happens” with little visual feedback, or you suddenly deal no damage for reasons that aren’t clear.
So why the positive review, if there are so many issues with the basics?
As I mentioned at the beginning—I did enjoy the game. I liked the music. I liked all the mechanics, even if they felt underdeveloped. The monster designs are appealing, which is a key factor in this kind of game. The humor in the dialogue genuinely made me smirk more than once. The creature manual adds a bit of depth and awards the player for being diligent. The teleportation map shows, which creatures the player has not yet collected.
I would recommend this game—not because it’s perfect, but because there’s still plenty of charm and enjoyment to be found in its current state.
