You really feel that this was the war of attrition. Plus, it turns out there were many less known fronts apart from western and eastern, each with its unique strategic considerations. The War unfolds like a cerfully prepared scenario on all those fronts - the best thing is, it is not a scenario!
AI is quite good when you learn how to play, and then there is an excellent multiplayer.

The game feels more operational compared to the WW II War in Europe, where I feel tanks can roll over most things, and there are no proper frontlines. The theatres feel very different - you need to balance various factors in planning your campaign in the Balkans, Western Front, Eastern Front, Caucasus, and Middle East. It also allows for exploring the rather neglected period of the Great War. The game has a built-in blue max mod with beautiful maps and counters. You have two maps to play: grand campaign on army/corps level and western front with a much bigger map of France on a divisional level. I loved it. Highly recommend it.
