Finally, a challenging game! We are in a time when the gaming industry strives to create "the hardest game,". Often this leads to artificial difficulty that generates more frustration than fun. Fortunately, NanoApostle embodies true difficulty, where the player is always in a position to react to every move. This is because the game is highly readable in every animation, extremely responsive, and well-designed in its combat mechanics. Speaking of design, the various boss fights in the game always offer one or more solutions to the player. Different mechanics can be applied and combined in the most effective way, tailored to the player’s style: you can dodge, parry, use a sort of active defense with a charged attack, or shoot. Any of these options can be highly effective if mastered and if you study the boss enough. And trust me, you have no choice but to do so. On the narrative side, although the story is limited to dialogues and images, there are still touching moments, as well as a sense of intrigue and unease conveyed by the game’s world. The cons concern the art direction and balance. The illustrations and character models aren’t bad during dialogues, but the in-game pixel art is really too rough. The balance is particularly problematic with the final boss, who is significantly harder than the rest of the enemies. It's due to a third phase that doesn’t add anything new to the move set, except reducing the attack opportunities. Despite these issues, the game remains incredibly fun and satisfying. It gave me enjoyment and a serious (actual) challenge, without ever causing frustration! Highly recommended!
